If you Love Indy-Folk Music

The resting place of threads that were very valid in 2004, but not so much in 2024. Basically this is a giant historical archive.

To my surprise, I found it was fairly all right as far as decency goes and the 2 brothers look NORMAL!
I expected total weirdo/scary / modern "performers" - usually devils in human attire. These guys looked respectable and sounded fairly nice.

Yes, and - amazingly - no tatoos or body piercings!

I will have to listen to the first selection soon, if it's the same type of thing ?

Yes, it is just as decent. :)

Have you ever heard Marillion? Another great, though less will known, British band. Here they are covering Keane's Bedshaped. Best version imho.
You will love it!

Thanks brother Arcmode! Another beautiful song.

Fun !
What is Indy folk music ? I thought it meant India at first.
Is it related to Indianapolis ?

I still can't get over how cleancut the brothers Ray and Darius are.
They look sincere as they sing, not plastic like the pics one sees when one opens one's email, where
ugly performers are plastered all over the screen to force one to look at their demonic countenances....

Hello Barbara. I believe that "Indy-Folk" means independent folk music. That is, not mainstream or classic folk music that one typically might think of when we hear the term Folk-Music. Often it might mean, if something is called "Indy", that it is a blend of other musical influences.

Indy used to mean not produced by a major label.

Indpendent of the mainstream commercial music industry.

Really, Coldplay and Keane are not indy, but the word has been appropriated by the mainstream music industry as a label to apply to a kind of 'sound' rather than a principled and deliberate stance against mass manufactured culture. Funny how words have more power when they only have one meaning. It is people who gain power over the word when they choose to make the meaning less precise, it's an aspect of humanism. As Confucious once said (or something like it, couldn't be bothered looking it up right now) 'If you want to restore civilization, restore the meaning of words.'

Industrial physiologists were employed during the 90's (and possibly before then, but this is when I became aware of it) to research various subcultures, such as skateboarders, heavy metal fans, goths, alternatives (indy music) so that they could integrate those sub cultures aesthetic, 'sound' and 'style' into the mainstream. This was also a way of capturing youth who were anti-establishment and likely to break away from worldlyness and 'society' by making what they loved part of the worldly society. And of course, to get all that money they were spending outside of the industry.

Before then there were sharp distinctions between groups of young people and the various scenes.

This is why we now hear heavy metal sounds, hip hop (rap) music and goth music on the mainstream radio and t.v. music shows, they appropriate everything into the collective, like the Borg of star Trek.

At least, that is my over-intellectual analysis of the word 'Indy.'

I was under the impression that popular and rock music were off limits for TOC people. Or is it a matter of the individual conscience?

Rock Music is so broad a term now that it is insufficient as a descriptor. David Wilkerson wrote strongly against Rock music in his book, "Set the Trumpet to Thy Mouth." I agree wholeheartedly with his views presented there. One of the things he says there is that lots of different styles and songs get put under the term rock music, but not all of them are contrary to the spiritual life of a Christian. For example, some of the most edifying music you can listen to outside of sacred music of the Church are some of the Christian rock songs of Keith Green, such as, "I don't wanna fall away from you" (see youtube.) What Wilkerson says is, if you want to know if a song is proper listening for a believer who wants to serve the Lord with all his or her heart, he suggests this: get alone with God, spend some solid time in prayer, contemplation of the Word of God, and draw as close as you can to God. When you are in that place of spiritual peace and joy in God's presence, turn on that music in question. If it quenches your spiritual joy and peace, it is not of God but is of a worldly spirit. If it complements the spiritual peace, it is okay.

In general I would say, worldly music is something to be avoided, not in all cases because it is bad, per se, but because compared to Sacred Music recordings, it is less beneficial, not being actually the best, but only acceptable or merely inoffensive. So, if one can wean oneself off of secular music entirely, this is a good thing indeed.
