It can even be about Orthodox Saints, such as Sonnerie de Ste-Genevieve du Mont de Paris, by Marin Marais.
Really resonant and also a nice change to hear occasionally. Especially nice to play every January 16 !
I might be incorrect, but, as far as I know, the Hierarchy didn't wage some large scale battle, with anathemas and excommunications, against Ukrainian/Russian, Georgian, or Greek folk music did they? Obviously, all things that are not against God have their proper place and time. Baroque music, folk music, etc, are great, but, we all know that they have no places in the temple of God in the New Testament.

Well, the question I see is, what is western music. Is French middle age music western music? I think there is nothing per se wrong at listening to music as long as it is not sinful and does not promote sin. Personally, I listen Bach Easter, Christmas and so on oratorios during these feasts. However, even if he was a good composer, you realize that this religious music (Bach's oratorios were played at church but Haendel's were not made to be played at church but at concerts) sounds really unorthodox... The only canonical prohibitions for music I know are for wedding parties.
