Frankenfish for dinner anyone?

The resting place of threads that were very valid in 2004, but not so much in 2024. Basically this is a giant historical archive.

Frankenfish for dinner anyone?

Post by Maria »

In its draft assessment prepared as part of a New Animal Drug Application (NADA), the FDA agrees that the possibility of GM salmon escaping from fish farms is extremely remote and that interbreeding with wild salmon is equally unlikely.

The possibility of the GM salmon escaping into rivers and the sea from land-based fish farms is "extremely remote", the FDA said.

For the full news story, please see: http://www.independent.co.uk/news/scien ... 30639.html

With the uncertainty of our weather, and with the rivers of vapor dropping rivers of water on us, it is very likely that these fish farms could be flooded and the frankenfish accidentally spilled into our rivers and down to our oceans. Ooops. I can just imagine that the FDA will call this Flood an act of God.

Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on me a sinner.

Who with half a brain in their head would affirm so decidedly that there is no serious risk of GM salmon interbreeding with wild salmon. What utter nonsense that they should say such a thing when it is not only possible, but given sufficient time, even likely.

URGENT - FDA will shortly approve frankenfish.

The website above will not allow a copy and paste of its material, so I am presenting a brief summary.

Even though 91 percent of consumers do not want genetically modified fish to be allowed on their plates, the FDA seems determined to allow this frankenfish to go forward to market.

39 other species of fish are also being genetically engineered to be bigger, faster growing, more colorful, and possibly deadly with unknown risks as the FDA is willing to grant approval to these new scientific experiments with little oversight and with no long term safety studies.

Furthermore, as with all genetically modified organisms (GMO), the FDA does not mandate that they be labeled. Thus, unsuspecting Americans may be eating this frankenfish at their local restaurants.

A personal note: when I was a student at the university and had to eat at the student cafeteria during finals when I had little time to fix my own food, the salmon served tasted like cardboard and made me sick. I asked some pointed questions and was told that this fish was farmed raised and that the feed was most likely artificially colored GMO corn. The cafeteria was run by a corporation whose main goal was to make profits. Students were hired at minimum wage, and the food was horrible.

Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on me a sinner.

Well, since the computer wouldn't even let me answer the one about the locusts - it must be REALLY BAD ! -
I am trying this thread regarding food and NON-food, instead.

I know what you mean about the University cafeteria food - the minute you said that about the salmon, I pictured it.

You were fortunate at least that you were informed about the vile farm raised fish. I never understood what that even was
until maybe 10 years ago.

Do you have any idea, Maria, or anyone else, when this Farmed Fish Foisted Onto The Market Fenomenon [to keep the alliteration going !]
started ? I dont think I saw any articles about it, but I didn't read the media for a good 20 years probably...i never knew any news.
People had to tell me about major world events [!]

This is scary about these fish.

Is there any way to avoid getting one for dinner by mistake ?

Ask the store manager or fish manager which fish are freshly caught. The ones caught wild in the Northern seas and oceans are the safest.

So far, only farm raised fish is suspect as they feed them artificially colored corn and soy. These various species of GMO fish will be farm raised. The FDA says that they will not be released, but all it takes is a flood to release them. We have floods all the time in the spring months. It is just a matter of time before the rivers, lakes, and oceans are filled with these GMO fishes, and with their voracious appetites, these GMO fishes will destroy the sensitive ecosystems and niches.

Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on me a sinner.
