This excellent news review, written by Hieromonk Enoch, should be read in full as it dispels the notion that Pope Francis is a conservative.

• The first Mass celebrated and televised by Pope Francis I, held in the Sistine
  Chapel, was celebrated on a newly erected Cranmerian style communion table, in
  front of the traditional altar. Even the arrangement of the six altar candles
  was somewhat strange, with each progressively inclined inward; this is in contrast
  to the retro order that Novus Ordo Conservative Benedict tried to revive, with
  the six candles in the Tridentine arrangement. Also noted was the lack of even
  chanting the collect, another change from his liturgical more conservative
  predecessor.

This sounds very beneficial. One of the first and only USEFUL assessments.

{Now the media is blabbing about his sports team. It gives them a chance to drum up their favorite subject
to divert the attention of the masses [of people not Liturgies] to the so-called Roman Circus effect : entertain the masses
with dumb "games". I am really against professional sports as absorbing way too much time and doing zero for
the soul's path to Heaven. Merely a bump on the road to throw one off and also get them into the GENERAL MENTALITY.
Don't let anyone have INDIVIDUAL perceptions, after all ! They must be formed to think and react like "everyone does".}

Saw that he celebrated Mass at a small church today and greeted afterwards the congregation on the steps vested as a simple priest.

Feel he is making a point in every thing he does, and for most folk worldwide it is these images that will be their first and lasting impression of Pope Francis. That plus that most Catholics experiences are post-Vatican 11 and you have a liturgically and theologically bankrupt generation, who are are ill-equipped to evaluate where their church is headed or to simply question it's direction.

Add in the ecumenist and multi-faith manoeuvres and their increasing acceptance by the many all my reservations and those of others better expressed than mine appear well founded.

I guess we will see soon enough just how bad it will get or not. For my part, I will not be surprised if he turns out to be a very bad pope who will disregard foundational truths of not only the One Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church but even of his own Roman Tradition. This will probably make him to be touted as a religious Superstar, more than anything else.But he will be a truly False Prophet. Maybe even THE False Prophet.

Yes, not only is the new Pope a false teacher, but he may be the False Prophet as Icxypion suggests.

I was quite taken with StephenS's remarks. VERY perceptive.

And Icxypion's as well. I think that is why I feel so leery about this man being there : he must be a false teacher using
these little "simplicities" to charm the flock and all observers.

I collected a little to add here, but I don't have much faith in the durability of the optimism.

Traditionalists are saying that this Pope has - counter to claims he is ANTI-Latin Mass - gone to pray before the tomb of
Pope Pius V as "a gesture of reconciliation" - hate that word as it's the word way overused, and also the sprightly euphemism
employed by the Vatican II Church for the Sacrament of Confession.
Supposedly this Pope Francis is reaching out to the traditional wing. But I don't place much stock on that assumption.
Public figures do things for theatrics all the time and are virtually empty of deep meaning.
If he does "rehabilitate"the Tridentine Mass, then we will judge then.
But I doubt it's very high on his agenda.

Regarding the Russian Orthodox Church, Pope francis is said to have often attended services at the Buenas Aires
Russian Church. I wonder if that is the Rocor-MP one that was taken away a few years ago from the Met Agafangel jurisdiction
which had successfully held onto it post-union ?
Anyone know ?

If he really did often attend Russian Liturgies, that is unusual for a Catholic prelate.
Maybe this needs to be investigated more.
It somehow does NOT ring true to me.
A mystically oriented prelate who would love the rich Orthodox Church environment does not
square with someone appearing as Mr Everyday Folksy, like this Pope seems
to be cultivating his image.
