Compact Flourescent Bulbs are Atrocious! Don't use

The resting place of threads that were very valid in 2004, but not so much in 2024. Basically this is a giant historical archive.

That is really strange. Better to get rid of the new bulbs and go with the old ones.

Was it compact fluorescent bulbs in 19th Century Holy Russia?

Is Outrage! Holy St. Seraphim of Sarov used candles!

Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on me a sinner.

Well, it is always a good idea to have a bunch of candles in store for if ever the power fails for a while. Who knows what terrible things will come in the future and what things we will have to live without. I believe it is wise to prepare for future disasters so that we are not caught having to fight through panicked crowds who did nothing to prepare for shortages. Instead, if we buy 9 to 12 months of supplies of all our daily necessities (and rotate our stock weekly with our new purchases going to the back so that we maintain a full stock) we will be able to stay safe at home on the very day that a crisis hits and everyone is fighting and killing each other for a loaf of bread or a gallon of gas or smashing through shop windows for what is left. Prepare, prepare, prepare.

Absolutely !

I liked that about the beeswax candles and lampadas. Much more genteel way to live !

Preferable for sure.

Funny, Maria, the takeoff on The Onion Dome - is that site still active ?
I did get some laughs from it years ago. I see you did too by the "Is Outrage"

Re Icxypion's sober post :
hopefully none of us will have to cry out :

"Is OUTAGE !"

Just in case, I keep thinking I would like to learn about generators and which ones are the right ones
and buy a couple, I guess !

God Willing outages would not be in our areas.

I am fabulously stocked up with the holy candle type of candle. Though I could replenish my stocks, now that I realize I
have used up many since I first brought a large collection to my home. Older ones were better, by the way, but we can't be picky.

I wrapped them well in plastic bags so to protect these precious things and stored them outdoors but under shelter.

I found a few hiding not long ago when searching for parts for gutters, and smiled, for it had been so long.
At least, the candles are not like food - they won't go bad !

Might be wise to stock up also on those automatic lighters. I see there is a new longer one for lighting holy candles, to
alleviate the problem of having to reach way down to almost the bottom of the glass to get to the wick.

Also purchasing large stock of beeswax candles supports our TOC monasteries and dioceses.

THAT' IS a GOOD IDEA !

They never go bad, after all.

Do beeswax candles need to be stored in a cool, dry place so they don't melt ??
I have had that happen, but haven't really though of stocking up on them in an organized fashion.

Guess what ?
Right after we all talked about this, I found 25 YEAR food supplies available in large white
buckets at the local general supermarket, a quiet, inexpensive one.
Not a trendy one, in short.

I was so surprised ! I examined these more closely and they
are packed with food for 4 people for 72 hours - a large meal for each,
in freeze dried packages I guess.

Only about $50 - and as the sign said : a good idea for a Russian Christmas gift -
no I am joking, but it did for a Christmas present, and Old Calendar Christmas is still ahead...!

The company was Augasons. Never heard of that, but seeing it at a usual grocery store,
not an outdoor store, for example, seems inspirational to get a move on with
preparing any special foods that one would want, such as oils, or vitamins or anything !

I recommend you carefully study the different companies out there before you buy. Some of the food's nutrition is not very good, nor do they taste very good. Also their guarantee of 25 years may be exaggerated. Some of them do not use organic foods, but GMO or preservatives.

BuyEmergencyfoods.com might be worth investigating as well as other manufacturers before you make a decision.
