Dont forget, the early Christians were respected by the pagans, among other things, because of the modesty of their women.
I hope and pray that Orthodox Christian women (both World Orthodoxy and True Orthodoxy) would dress more modestly, and that JC Penney and other department stores would have more modest online catalogs, but it appears that we are in the End Times where the faith is growing cold, and where perverted or ignorant women have taken to wear underwear as their regular outside apparel. Just look at Madonna, Lady Gaga, and other popular singers! They are certainly not proper role models, but our youth emulate them instead of the Most Holy Theotokos.
Where I live, there is a mix of Jews, Muslims, and Christians. Sometimes, when I go to the supermarket, people stare at me because I do dress modestly. Often times, they must wonder if I am a Muslim. I am torn because I do not want to draw attention to myself, but one man came up to me and congratulated me for wearing a long modest skirt as some women wear hot pants, very short skirts, or long skirts made of transparent materials without slips. On the downside, several Coptic Christian laity here in the USA have been either killed or attacked as they were mistaken for Muslims.
I know many Orthodox Christians who would rather buy from Orthodox Christian vendors, but are there Orthodox Christians who sew and sell modest clothing online? I know some Orthodox Christians who buy clothes from Muslim or Jewish online vendors because they want to dress modestly. There is this online clothing site called Holy Clothing, which appears to be a Wicca, New Age, or Jewish outlet. I feel weird viewing these online sites. They do not have Christian modesty in mind, but boast about their own particular faith.
Most skirts that I purchase online are too short for me. The length they give is often misleading. However, if I buy tall skirts, then they are too long. I figure that by the time I purchase some fabric, wash, cut, and sew it, I come out ahead, as it takes time to rip out side seams or hems and make the needed adjustments on vendor purchased apparel. In addition, I have found that I must resew the seams of newly purchased clothing from stores or online vendors as seams are poorly sewn or threads break the first time I wash them. If a skirt is too short, then I might have to add a ruffle, but I must search the fabric store for suitable fabric if any can be found. Most of the time, I end up repairing and giving these clothes away to a charity because they usually shrink when I wash them the first time in a cold wash. It does not matter if the material is cotton or rayon. Therefore, it is best to make my own clothing, but that is also time consuming.
Perhaps I should start a new thread about sources of modest clothing as my Metropolitan has asked for appropriate online links.
