Bartholomew`s "with one's back facing to the people" liturgy

Post by Priest Siluan »

This is a "old news", because it is about about the liturgy which Patriarch Bartholomew served in the Monastery of Trabzon, which was closed by the Turks since 1922.

It is very interesting about the first liturgy wich has taken place ther sice 1922, has been according to the "Vatican II style", "with one's back facing to the people" ("ad populum")... it is a thing really innovative., but from the "World Orthodoxy" nothing could surprise us.

Some people say that this "Papist innovation" is more and more "accepted" among the Greek "Orthodox" Ecumenist.

For instance, see the video:

I wouldn't say "with one's back facing to the people", since that is confusing in English: it isn't clear whether the person is facing the people or not. I would say simply "facing the people", although I understood what you meant. And yes, this is a hallmark of post-Vatican II New Rite RC celebrations. In the pre-Vatican II Tridentine Rite, as in the Orthodox Divine Liturgy, the priest faced the altar, with his back to the people.

Dear in Christ, Jonathan,

Thank you for the correction.
