MEPs Approve Resolution Seeking to Allow Women on Mount Athos

January 16, 2003 (Kathimerini) -- The European Parliament yesterday approved
by a marginal majority a 135-article resolution, submitted by Dutch MEP Joke
Swiebel, which, among other matters, seeks to lift a millennium-old ban on
women entering the all-male monastic community on Mount Athos as part of a
broader reinforcement of the fundamental rights of EU citizens. The ban on
women entering Mount Athos is a violation of sexual equality and EU
legislation governing discrimination, equality and citizens' freedom of
movement, according to the resolution, which was approved by 277 votes to
255.

The EU has recently passed this resolution. It is terrible and shows that the EU is not interested in Christian tradition. The EU worships at the altar of secular humanism and political correctness. They care more about 'fairness according to agenda' than Christian truth. Greece should have never joined the EU.

How very sad. Let us all pray Greece will prevail as the enemy all men attacks her and attemps to lure her away from the true path of Orthodoxy. I have never been to the Holy Mountain, but I do live relatively close to Geronda Ephraim's Monastery Saint Anthony's which I am told is very very close to how things work at Philotheou of the Holy Mountian. It is so wonderful, and even though my understanding of Greek is very limited I love to attend liturgy there more than any other church. I couldn't imagine how devistated I would be if secularist desacrated the Holy Monastery...or the Holy Mountain.

Panagia Theotoke, soson imas!

Horrible News!

The news from the Holy Mountain has been nothing but bad of late. The EU may be good for the European economy, but it is proving not to be good for much else but stirring up trouble.

If they actually do insist that women be allowed to visit Athos, I wonder if the monks would allow it. Or perhaps the EU can just have the military and/or police take care of that "problem" after they're done dealing with the "rebels" that are being dealt with presently :(

It's said that the Mother of God claimed Mt Athos for herself. That as long as women did not go there she would protect the Mount from all onslaughts. Perhaps we need to pray harder and ask her not to abandon the Mount to the onslaught of the godless.
