Will Senator John McCain choose Mike Huckabee or Mitt Romney as his running mate in 2008? It is an interesting choice that says much about the "theology" of John McCain. Clearly, George W. Bush was elected to the U.S. Presidency in 2000 and 2004 with substantial help from right-wing Protestant Evangelicals. Mike Huckabee, a Baptist preacher, won a substantial number of popular votes and Republican primaries this past year with very limited campaign funds. The primary votes for Huckabee came almost exclusively from the Evangelical Protestant bloc. Romney, on the other hand, is a former corporate CEO who represents the interests of corporations and wealthy elites, as well as conservatives (including Mormons) who are not Christians in any meaningful sense of the word. So, in a sense, we may ask whether John McCain, in his choice of a running mate, will choose "God or Mammon." Will McCain choose God (the nominal "Christian" Huckabee) or Mammon (Romney)?
