Consecration of Bishop Peter

Post by bogoliubtsy »

Posted with permission of Fr. John Shaw:

Yesterday, on the feast of Ss. Peter and Paul, Fr. Archimandrite
Peter (Loukianoff) was consecrated Bishop of
Cleveland and Vicar of the Diocese of Chicago and Detroit, by His
Eminence Metropolitan Lavr, in concelebration with Archbishop Alypy
and
Bishop Kirill.

As a guest at the ceremonies, Bishop Job of the OCA also attended,
with a number of his priests.

Numerous messages of congratulations from other hierarchs, both of
ROCOR and other Orthodox Churches, and laity all over the world, were
also read.

At the same Liturgy, the new Bishop Peter ordained Subdeacon Julian
Grachev to the diaconate, to serve the Chicago cathedral. Fr. Julian
is
of Muscovite background, while his matushka is from St. Petersburg.

There were at least 29 concelebrant priests, and several deacons. The
church was packed with faithful (communion was given from two
chalices), and the choir sang beautifully.

Unfortunately, there was one heckler -- who is told people he opposed
Vl. Peter's ecclesiology (Bishop Peter is one of many ROCOR
moderates) and who seems to have come to church
specially to try and disrupt the services. The heckler was asked to
leave.

Among the laity who attended was the sister of King Simeon of
Bulgaria,
and another member of the Bulgarian royal family. The Bulgarian
royalty
were commemorated at the Great Entrance.

Also among the guests were Bishop Peter's three brothers.

A banquet followed the service, and a very pleasant time was had by
all who attended.

In Christ
Fr. John R. Shaw

Yes, as I am sure he is! Met. Philaret was the last of the Maximovitch Bishops.

As a guest at the ceremonies, Bishop Job of the OCA also attended, with a number of his priests.

Since I'm sure there were those from the Cyprianite synod, communion was not given to "Bishop" Job and his "priests". But it seems as though that day may be coming for the ROCOR.

Yes, hopefully....as was prayed for for many, many years. Glory be to God!

Let's not forget that Christ is the head of this Church. Despite the failings and sinfulness of its members, the Church will stay pure until the end of time. Heresies come and go but the Church will always prevail. It seems like some of the more extreme resistance groups have made little popes out of themselves, becoming themselves judges prior to an ecumenical synod on a matter or prior to what is essentially Christ's final judgement. It's brought up constantly, but let's not forget that the extreme heresy of Arianism, which makes what's happening in the WCC look mild, didn't cause people to "wall themselves off". Maybe people had more faith then that the Church would prevail?

His Grace will be in our prayers! What a heavy burden it is to be a bishop, what a price he pays and what danger he is in!

The heckler reminds me of one of the most sobering statements concerning the state of the Church that I've heard yet:

...our whole Church [ROCOR] has had to endure powerful disturbances hitherto unseen. As if from deep within the bosom of the body of the Church cracks began to appear, though they have not yet developed into deep fissures. We look on with fear as in places they are trying to transform these chinks into rifts which split apart not only the flock, but even the clergy.

That was from the Address of the Council of Bishops of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia to Its Flock October in 2001 (and the whole document--along with the document written a few months earlier--should be required reading for anyone wishing to comment on some of the things said and done in 2000 by the ROCOR bishops)

Let us not forget that the XV canon of the First-Second Council says that one is indeed correct for seperating from their president when heresy is preached. So, it seems as if you may be extreme in "becoming a judge after a counciL". The CHurch will be preserved, but no always the Jurisdiction.

Well, all I gotta say is that I wish Fr. Peter, I mean Bishop Peter (gonna take me a while to get used to that), all the best & many years. May he use his many talents for the good of the Church, and lead his flock well.
(BTW, for people who've never met Bsp. Peter, he rocks. :) )
