Suggestions about books to read?

Post by Daria_L »

Hey!

I've recently married a greek orthodox man... :) And I'm going to convert. I just loooove it ! /\ I've started to go to the church with my husband and I'm reading some books to learn about orthodoxy.
Does anyone have any suggestions for a beginner like me...?
I used to be an adventist so the worship of Saints is a bit difficult for me to accept.... :?

Hi Daria,
To start off on the right foot, it's simple, we don't worship saints, but we do worship the One True God, the Holy Trinity, as He has been revealed in the Orthodox+Church and described in the "Symbol of Faith", the Nicene Creed.
Saints are those who have won the battle we are now fighting here on earth and for that reason they are very helpful to keep us the right path.
If you can read on-line a good daily read is The Prologue from Ochrid. It will help give you a beginning knowledge of the lives of the saints and also some basic Orthodox teaching.
I am sure others will give their favourite first books, and there are many to read, so be prepared, but since our Lord said ", If any [man] will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me", one of my first recommendations is Tito Colliander's "Way of the Ascetics".
