I've been using the Bertolli Classic olive oil as the Holy Cross Hermitage monks suggested. It works MUCH better than the pomace (cheap stuff) olive oil I used before. My lamp, without trimming, will go for about 12-14 hours. After that, the flame goes out as the wick above the holder is burned totally black.

I use one of the plain blue glasses the monastery sells.

When cuting the cotton cord for wicks, what is an ideal length?

Father Vasyl,

For me, I grab one end of the wicking material and measure to my elbow and cut there.

Dear Father Deacon Nikolai,

Thank you. Come to think of it that's about half the length I use for measuring yarn for making prayer ropes (times 8, that is).
