RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil — A 9-year-old gave birth to a baby girl in the western Amazon jungle, a pregnancy that authorities say may have been the result of rape, the National Indian Bureau said Friday.

The girl was found in the jungle in April by laborers working on a natural gas pipeline from the Coari oil fields to Manaus, a city of 1.5 million people 1,800 miles northwest of Rio de Janeiro, said the bureau, known as Funai.

She was taken to Manaus and went into labor on Thursday. The baby, weighing 4.9 pounds, was delivered by Caesarean section and reportedly was in good health, said Daniele Santos of the Funai press office.

The mother, of the Apurina tribe, has refused to speak, and the identity of the infant's father was unknown, Santos said.

"In some cultures it's natural for girls to have sexual relations after their first menstruation, but now we have to study if that was the case here, if their culture permits this," Santos said.

Mother and child were to remain under medical care for a month and then return to their village in Jaturana, about 75 miles from Manaus, she said.

"It's very rare, and we have to investigate whether it was rape," said Marina Mota, a press officer for the National Health Foundation. "The tribe wasn't that isolated, and had a lot of contact" with outside cultures.

National census figures show Brazil has about 700,000 Indians. Most of them live in the northern Amazon rain forest.

Fla. Man Sentenced For Having Sex Slave

BONITA SPRINGS, Fla. -- A North Fort Myers man has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for his role in harboring a 13-year-old girl kept as a sex slave and housekeeper.

U.S. District Judge Virginia M. Hernandez Covington gave Fernando Pascual, 22, what she considered a lenient sentence Tuesday. As part of a plea deal, Pascual pleaded guilty in March to charges of sex trafficking and harboring an illegal immigrant for commercial gain. His sentence of 10 years was in exchange for the victim not having to testify because she was traumatized, Covington said.

"These are truly horrible crimes you have committed and they will not be tolerated in the United States," Covington said.

Pascual, his sister, Matilde Pascual Andres, and Andres' husband, Pascual Miguel Sebastian, were charged in May 2005 with harboring a young girl in a Cape Coral home. Prosecutors said the girl was bought in Guatemala and brought to Cape Coral, where she was raped, beaten and forced to work.

Matilde Pascual Andres also was sentenced Tuesday to 22 months in prison for her role. Pascual Miguel Sebastian was sentenced to 16 months in May on a similar charge.

"This is finally a chance ... to move forward," said Chief Assistant U.S. Attorney Doug Molloy.

BREAST-enhancing padded bras for girls as young as six are being sold in Victorian shops.

Childhood experts have warned parents they could be baiting pedophiles by dressing their young girls as raunchy women.

Tiny matching lingerie sets of lacy bras and knickers in many children's brands including Bratz, Saddle Club and Barbie, have hit the shelves aimed at girls who are barely old enough for school.

The Herald Sun last week revealed the latest Bratz Babyz range included sexually provocative baby dolls dressed in leather and lingerie.

The padded Bratz "bralettes" were among more than 30 different junior bra styles starting at size six on sale at a city Target store visited by the Herald Sun yesterday.

The Australian Family Association warned parents against sexualising their children. "We have a growing problem with pedophilia and people viewing children as sex objects," spokeswoman Angela Conway said.

"Children do not need these products and I am appalled. It is more than bad taste. The sexual portrayal of children in this country is illegal and these products are pandering to just that."

Australian Childhood Foundation CEO Dr Joe Tucci said padded bras were "the most ridiculous piece of clothing a parent could buy".

Bratz distributor Funtastic defended the range.

"The idea of the padding is for girls to be discreet as they develop," a spokeswoman said.

"It is more about hiding what you have got than showing it off. It is certainly not there to make children look like they have breasts."

Target also stood by the underwear range. It provided "fashionable items that give girls modesty and style as they go through development changes", a spokeswoman said.

Palmdale Man Arrested in Rape of 10-Year-Old Girl at Movie Theater

A 31-year-old Palmdale man was arrested after he confessed to raping a 10-year-old girl at a movie complex in the Antelope Valley Mall last month, Los Angeles County sheriff's detectives said Tuesday.

Sheriff's detectives initially sought to interview the suspect's father, Henry Clark, who is listed on the state attorney general's website as having committed lewd or lascivious acts on a child under the age of 14.

When detectives knocked on the Clarks' door, the father was not home, but the son, Marque, was. He told detectives that he, not his father, regularly went to the Antelope Valley Mall and that he was at the movie theater at the time of the attack. He became the focus of the investigation, Sgt. Dan Scott said.

The girl was attacked at knifepoint at the Movies 10 complex at the Antelope Valley Mall on Aug. 29 by a man who pulled her into an empty movie theater and assaulted her.

The crime shocked and galvanized the community.

The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors offered a $10,000 reward; the city of Palmdale, the Antelope Valley Mall, the company that owns the theater complex and the U.S. Marshals Service together contributed $35,000.

At the same time, sheriff's detectives in Palmdale began an intense manhunt, investigating close to 175 leads.

Detectives in the sheriff's special victims unit started by targeting the 23 registered sex offenders who live in the mall's ZIP Code — 93551 — seeking to interview each one as to his whereabouts at the time of the attack, Scott said.

After Clark told detectives that he was at the movies at the time of the attack, detectives asked him for a voluntary DNA swab, Scott said, which Clark allowed them to take.

About the same time, the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children delivered enhanced surveillance footage taken by security cameras at the theaters.

"The detective was sitting down and going through all the footage and he noticed a very suspicious individual going in and out of doors, looking around … who just happened to look similar to the suspect they'd recently talked to," Scott said.

At that time, the crime lab still had not returned the results from the DNA swab, so detectives asked Marque Clark to take a polygraph exam, which he failed, Scott said.

That's when Clark confessed. A search warrant on the home yielded further evidence, Scott said, but he declined to elaborate.

Clark is being held on $2-million bail, he said.

Court: Child-renting sentence too short

ST. LOUIS, Missouri (AP) — A federal appeals court threw out the 10-year prison sentence of a woman who rented her 9-year-old daughter to a pedophile more than 200 times, saying the punishment was too lenient.

The woman often held the girl down in their home while Joe J. Champion molested her, according to court documents. Champion typically paid the mother $20.

The Associated Press is not naming the woman, to protect her daughter's identity.

"The factors of this case are no less than horrifying," Judge William Jay Riley wrote in the unanimous opinion released Monday by a three-judge panel.

Champion pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 15 years in prison.

The woman, convicted in 2003 of aggravated sexual abuse and conspiring with Champion to help him molest the girl, was sentenced to 17-1/2 years in prison -- the minimum provided under sentencing guidelines.

She appealed, and a panel of judges sent the case back to U.S. District Judge Charles A. Shaw, saying he might have given her a lighter sentence if he had known he was not bound by the guidelines.

Shaw then sentenced the woman to 10 years, saying mental problems and drug addiction had influenced her behavior. The judge also noted that she had taken parenting classes and had vocational training while in prison.

The judge said he did not believe the woman posed a danger to the public and was unlikely to repeat the actions, according to court documents.

The appeals judges disagreed. They found the woman's efforts to rehabilitate herself neither "lessen the horrendous treatment" of her daughter, nor indicate that she would not again offer her daughter to an abuser for money.

Kevin Schriener, the woman's attorney, said Tuesday he would ask for a rehearing of the appeal.

Teen girl admits aiding sex assault of 11-year old girl by more than 12 adult men

MILWAUKEE - A 16-year-old girl was sentenced to up to three years in a juvenile facility for aiding in what authorities said was a series of sexual assaults on an 11-year-old girl by more than a dozen males at a party.

The girl, one of 14 people to be charged in the case, pleaded guilty Tuesday to three counts of being party to first-degree sexual assault. Assistant District Attorney Matt Torbenson said that officials originally believed she had orchestrated the assaults but later concluded her role was less extensive.

The house where the Labor Day assaults occurred was “a community center of chaos” where children and adults knew they could do anything they wanted, Torbenson said.

Milwaukee County Children’s Court Judge Thomas Cooper also sentenced the teen to two more years of supervision. She also must receive sex-offender treatment and counseling.

He suggested the teen could meet with the victim, if the younger girl approves, to help with her emotional healing.

“Maybe there is something you can do to help the victim get beyond this,” he said. “You owe it to her to do what you can.”

Seymour Gimbel, attorney for the victim, told Cooper she was having a difficult time and “will never outlive what has happened here. She shakes when she talks about it.”

The teen has cooperated with police, agreed to testify against others and understands what she did was wrong, the judge was told. Her attorney, David Zerwick, said that despite her age, she “is very childlike in many respects.”
