Pontification is a two-way street

A contest that compares beauty encourages vanity.... How can he think that is good?

What you are doing is the prototypical traditionalist error though: find someone else's potential or actual sin, pontificate from on high about how awful it is, or make sweeping judgments about how evil it is, and then finish off with something that makes what you are saying sound like the only logical conclusion.

Ze pot he is calling the kettle black, no? Sounds like a sweeping judgement of Christian discernment using secularist presuppositions as the only permissible premise.
Of course you are right about both the girl and the questionable edifying value of internet forums. But is it really outlandish to think a beauty contest might encourage vanity?

God Bless,
Rd. David

Gotta agree with Justin...
Seems like all some spend their time doing is searching--on the internet of course--find something worth gossipping about, and post it on some forum.
"He's promoting vanity; so glad I'm not like that."
(Insert sarcasm here.)

The woman is beautiful, but I suppose there are some that want them all dressed in burkahs.

Very true, but I am not aware of any Orthodox Christians pushing burkahs, that would be the traditionalist Muslims. Perhaps modesty in dress falls someplace between many overly revealing modern fashions and burkahs?

Justin is right, though, about internet forums having a lot of dross and little gold. If we are not gossiping and backbiting, we are taking the most ridiculous caricatures of everyone else's positions and killing real conversation.

There is the male counterpart...the body building contest(I know there are those for women too, but to make a point)...it's all about the body. Although the body builders don't need to have attractive faces, like the beauty contests.

But, as far as beauty contests go..I don't see anything spiritual about it. Does anybody know why it was started in the first place? And what does it say about the women that participate? I know that Sandra Bullock portrayed an heroic image about it, but really what does it do for mankind?

Now if there was a contest about intelligent and caring women in the world, then that would be reasonable. Or how about Orthodox women(and men for that matter) who compete in a contest to be the most outstanding Orthodox or Christian, for that matter?

Wouldn't we then sit there and think how ridiculous it is to compete to be the best Orthodox or Christian(in general terms)? So when it comes down to it, in my mind, beauty contests are frivolous and devoid of spiritual context. I know, I know...there are many things we do in our lives that are frivolous, but to base a contest on beauty is like paying an athlete millions of dollars to play a game. It's all about money which cannot be taken with us when we die, anyways. So if they want to do that, so be it. Maybe they will use the money to help others. That would be great....to help others based on the face and body that God gave them or the athletic talent.

As far as the online arguement goes...the internet is just another form of communication, like letters, telephone, fax or face to face; people will always be comfronted by strife, in every form of communication; because strife can only exist where there is communication between two people or more. The point is to have mind-set of consideration, decency and self-control.

PS...Since when do Orthodox hierarchs bless the participation in beauty contests? That...I think, is out of line.

Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me. (Ps. 50)

Sounds to me like the Aesop fable about the fox and the grapes; jealousy, envy, sour grapes.
Let's all keep justifying our passions and/or idiosyncracies while pointing out everyone else's. This approach seems to work extremely well on the Internet.
Just curious...
The ones that have a problem with this; what should have the responce been--would you rather a condemning statement issued? public scolding? a beating? I'm sure there are some that would not be satisfied until blood is drawn to "atone" for their decision.
