UOC-MP Orthodox Administrator Meets in Kyiv with Russian Old Believer’s HeadKyiv – During a meeting with Metropolitan Kornily (Titov), head of the Russian Orthodox Old-Rite Church (ROORC), which took place in Kyiv on 8 June 2006, Archbishop Mytrofan (Yurchuk), administrator of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Moscow Patriarchate (UOC-MP), noted that today there are all the preconditions for constructive dialog between the hierarchs and faithful of the UOC-MP and the ROORC. Metropolitan Kornily said that the aim of his visit to Ukraine is preparation for a sobor (assembly) of Old Believers.
Preparations are now being conducted for a jubilee sobor, which is due to take place in Ukraine in September. “It will be our famous sobor, summoned to honor the 160th anniversary of our Bilokrynytsia Eparchy. This event will be marked by Russian Old Believers in Ukraine, Romania, and other countries. We should revive our traditions and show everybody that the Old Believers in the whole world are united in common prayer and care for the destiny of the Orthodox. The Old Believers from Russia and Ukraine have had no contacts for 10 years now. Therefore the sobor is of utmost importance for us,” said Metropolitan Kornily.
Metropolitan Kornily said: “We will discuss the canonization of the common saints who glorified our church, and relations with the government regarding the revival of our sanctuaries, in particular Bilokrynytsia, which is a great historical complex, and the revival of its status as a common shrine of the Old Believers.”
Metropolitan Kornily shared his ideas about the problems of Orthodoxy in the modern world and underlined that it is the right time to revive the shrines and to preach the Orthodox truths. According to him, today is a favorable time for the Old Believers, who were persecuted for more than 300 years.
