Canons from the 5th & 6th Council:

Canons from the 5th & 6th Council:

Canon XII:Moreover, this also has come to our knowledge, that in Africa
and Libya, and in other places the most God-beloved bishops in those
parts do not refuse to live with their wives, even after consecration,
thereby giving scandal and offence to the people. Since, therefore, it
is our particular care that all things tend to the good of the flock
placed in our hands and committed to us - it has seemed good that
henceforth nothing of the kind shall in any way occur. And we say this,
not to abolish and overthrow what things were established of old by
Apostolic authority, but as caring for the health of the people and
their advance to better things, and lest the ecclesiastical state
should suffer any reproach...But if any shall have been observed to do
such a thing, let him be deposed.

Canon XLVII:The wife of him who is advanced to hierarchical dignity,
shall be seperated from her husband by their mutual consent, and after
his ordination and consecration to the episcopate she shall enter a
monastery situated at a distance from the abode of the bishop, and
there let her enjoy the bishop's provision.
And if she is deemed worthy
she may be advanced to the dignity of a deaconess.

May I please suggest that the question of married bishops after the 6th Ecumenical Council be continued in an existing thread on this topic at http://euphrosynoscafe.com/forum/viewto ... 6165#36165 please? I have posted the canons pertaining to this issue there as well.

Yes, thank you.

  1. A Bishop does not have to be a monastic
  2. A Bishop can be married but must be celibate.
  3. A Bishop must care for his wife.
  4. Apostolic Authority is clearly referenced and clearly governing.

There is no indication that Alexy II marriage did not meet the canonical requirements.

Given the severe persecution in the Soviet Union, there does not seem to be much cause to go after the poor man for being married and then being appointed Bishop. Maybe it was done to prevent him from being drafted by the authorities?

This is not the case of Alexey II, he got divorced few months after his marriage in 1950 and he was ordered bishop much later in 1961 being a monk.

Being in the MP and "Collaborating with Soviet State" there would not be so much persecution, if there has been some married bishop (I don't know it) in the MP it was surely for reasons of influence from Renovacionist Church.

What possible difference does it make?

Their marriage was dissolved, he did the right thing and became a monastic. So she did not feel compelled to be come a monastic herself, I'm sure she was not the first or the last. She still mananged to have a good second marriage, raised her children as best as she could and was not an ax murderer.

Who are WE to JUDGE THEM for what happened over 50 years ago? It's done, it's finished. MOVE ON! After all this time I'm sure that WE are the only ones stupid enough to keep harping on this tired old subject. I'm pretty sure that GOD has more important things to worry over than this stupidity.
