The Sixth Meeting of the Commissions of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia and the Moscow Patriarchate is Held

On February 17, 2006, the sixth working meeting of the Commissions of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia and of the Moscow Patriarchate opened at Holy Virgin Protection Church in Nyack, NY. Participating in this meeting were all the members of the two Commissions with the exception of His Grace Bishop Ambroise of Vevey, who had recently undergone a serious operation. It was agreed that Priest Serafim Gan, Secretary of the First Hierarch of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia, would participate in the meetings.

With the blessing of His Eminence Metropolitan Laurus, the Kursk-Root Icon of the Mother of God was brought to Nyack by Archimandrite Luke of Holy Trinity Monastery in Jordanville for the opening of the meetings. After praying before this holy icon, the members of both Commissions commenced their joint work. The blessed presence of the miracle-working Icon aided in the fruitful work of the Commissions.

On February 18, the Commission members prayed at Divine Liturgy at St Sergius of Radonezh Chapel at the Synodal Building in New York. After breakfast, prepared by the Sisterhood of the Synodal Cathedral of Our Lady of the Sign, His Grace Bishop Gabriel of Manhattan showed the visitors from Russia the holy icons and relics of the Cathedral. The Commission members then continued their work in the Synodal Hall. Bishop Gabriel participated in one of the meetings .

On Sunday, February 19, Archbishop Innokenty, the President of the Moscow Patriarchate's Commission on discussions with the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia, officiated at Divine Liturgy at St Nicholas Patriarchal Cathedral in New York, along with his Commission members and the Cathedral's clergymen. The President of the Commission on discussions with the Moscow Patriarchate, His Eminence Archbishop Mark of Berlin and Germany, performed Divine Liturgy at St Seraphim Church in Sea Cliff, NY, along with the members of his Commission and the parish and visiting clergymen. Archimandrite Tikhon (Shevkunov) prayed at this service. Afterwards, a memorial trapeza in honor of the late Bishop Mitrofan (Znosko-Borovsky, +2002) was held, after which Archbishop Mark and Archimadrite Tikhon led a discussion in the parish hall and answered parishioners' questions.

That evening, after a joint trapeza at St Nicholas Patriarchal Cathedral Hall, the members of the Commissions were received by His Eminence Metropolitan Laurus at the Synod of Bishops.

During these meetings, which conclude on February 20, the Commissions continued their discussion of the matters set before them.

In connection with the multitude of requests by the parishioners of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia to publish more detailed information on the progress of the talks and on the decisions regarding the reestablishment of the unity of the Russian Church, the Commissions proposed a series of measures intended to better inform the flocks.

On February 21, the members of the Commissions visited Holy Trinity Monastery in Jordanville. After Divine Liturgy, a round table was held at Holy Trinity Seminary Hall, where the progress of the talks was discussed. The members of the Commissions answered numerous questions posed by teachers and students and the monastic brethren.

Why no specifics?

Because everything they say gets twisted and turned 20 different ways to make them look bad?

Because people ignore what they say anyway, and just scan documents for lines that reinforce their already existing misconceptions?

Because the Orthodox, and especially the ROCOR, have been historically reticent and conservative, and speak only when necessary?

Because they don't have to, and you don't have either the authority or the justification to make them?

Maybe they just tire of all the bickering, and want to proceed as quickly and smoothly as possible?

Maybe they are trying to balance different factions--as they did throughout their entire history--and keep the boat from tipping?

"Thus, with regret our whole Church has had to endure powerful disturbances hitherto unseen. As if from deep within the bosom of the body of the Church cracks began to appear, though they have not yet developed into deep fissures. We look on with fear as in places they are trying to transform these chinks into rifts which split apart not only the flock, but even the clergy." - Address of the Council of Bishops of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia to Its Flock (2001)

Rostislav:

Your replies if nothing else are so predictable ....sigh...

As to those "infamous" documents.... no one truly "knows" what is in them for they have not been hashed out, approved, bantered and/or officially posted. All we have is a lot of speculation, supposition, opinions, hearsay and more "I Believes" than we need. Every single pro/con on this topic has been hashed and rehashed. It is time to let the people do their jobs without all the rhetoric and malice. If it is to be then GOD...that factor that most of these conversations leave out...will Will it so. If it is not to be then GOD...again that factor we forget to account for or even credit.... will again decide.

Sarcasm and the belittling of others serves no purpose. But then again I'm also fairly sure that Rostislav will shoot back that I should keep my opinions to myself and that I should stop polluting "HIS" post.

I really DON'T care about your opinion or even what compromise rocor makes--but IF one pays attention to the wcc thread, the perceptive and intelligent person perceives a great crisis brewing. One need only acquaint oneself to the recent "World Orthodox" conference on ecumenism held in Thessaloniki. We are at a crossroads and if the wrong side prevails, only resistance will be appropriate. ecumenism is clearly heresy and the ecclesiology the Orthodox participating in Brazil are affirming is heretical. I care about the Russian church, and my concern is the uprooting of error. What the corrupt "spokesmen of the metropolitan" conjure up directly impacts sane and concerned Orthodox Christians within the Mother Church who've had it with unionism and ecumenism. That you don't care or can fully appreciate the situation is typical, but let not you and yours oppress those interested in Orthodoxy with uninformed, unengaged fecklessness--SECRET SYNODS ARE EXPRESSLY FORBIDDEN BY THE CANONS. Enough.

Archbishop Mark of Berlin and Germany Officiates at Divine Liturgy at St Seraphim Church in Sea Cliff, NY, and Leads a Discussion with the Parishioners Together with Archimandrite Tikhon (Shevkunov)

Between sessions of the sixth joint meeting of the Commissions of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia and of the Moscow Patriarchate being held in Nyack, NY, from February 17-20, Archbishop Mark of Berlin and Germany visited St Seraphim Church in Sea Cliff, NY. There he officiated at Sunday's Divine Liturgy along with the Rector of Holy Transfiguration Cathedral in Los Angeles, CA, Mitred Protopriest Alexander Lebedeff, the Secretary of the ROCOR Commission; member of the same Commission Protopriest Nikolai Artemoff, Secretary of the German Diocese; Protopriest Peter Holodny, Treasurer of the Synod of Bishops; Rector of St Seraphim Church Priest Serafim Gan; and Protopriest Victor Boldewskul of Epiphany Chuch in Roslindale (Boston), MA; along with Protodeacon Paul Wolkow and Protodeacon Thomas Reske. Archimandrite Tikhon (Shevkunov), Prior of Sretensky Stavropighial Monastery in Moscow, prayed in the altar during Liturgy. Archbishop Mark delivered a thoughtful sermon, and the Parish Rector, Fr Serafim, welcomed His Eminence before the veneration of the cross.

Protodeacon Paul then intoned "Eternal Memory" to the late Bishop Mitrofan (Znosko-Borovsky, +2002), the long-time Parish Rector, who died on the Presentation of the Lord.

After a commemorative trapeza organized by the parish sisterhood under the direction of AN Ryl, His Eminence and Fr Tikhon spoke. Vladyka Mark shared his recollections of Vladyka Mitrofan and discussed the progress of the talks with the Moscow Patriarchate, and Fr Tikhon spoke about the Church in Russia and the life and work of Sretensky Monastery, its publishing arm and seminary. The parishioners then posed questions which were answered in detail.
