Dear AndyHolland
could one then say that the short answer to Fr. Robert Taft is that the good shepherd minds his flock and leaves no leeway for rustlers?

There are plenty of wolves in sheeps clothing, but the sheep know the shepherd - Jesus Christ the Lord. We cannot confess this truth without the power of the Holy Spirit, and it seems right to the Holy Spirit and to us to confirm or deny the teachings of Bishops - even the Bishop of Rome - even St. Peter and Church Fathers.

Papal infallibility states that the Pope can teach something without confirmation of the whole Church. Again however it is not officially official.
