This is a very unfair shot; certainly I do not think Fr. Alexander was always 100% correct (then he would be Jesus) but to attack someone's integrity - a fellow sinner - is over the top.

St. Maximos the Confessor did not leave the Orthodox Church even though every Patriarch was unorthodox. It is precisely the point of the article. Consider that St. James the Just stayed in the temple even to the shedding of his blood.

Fr. Alexander's actions are very consistent with the article.

St. Maximos the Confessor DID CEASE Communion with the rest of the Church and went into RESISTANCE, maintaining ORTHODOXY until a Council could be called...Kyrie Eleison!

orthodoxinfo.com has some very good PATRISTIC & CANONICAL articles which can be used as reference regarding the topics at hand.

It is in this blessed and most holy embrace that is accomplished this awesome mystery of a union transcending mind and reason by which God becomes one flesh and one spirit with the Church and thus with the soul, and the soul with God. O Christ, how shall I marvel at your goodness? I shall not presume to sing praise because I have not enough strength to marvel in a worthy manner. For, 'they shall be two in one flesh,' says the divine Apostle; 'this is a great mystery, I speak of Christ and the Church.' And he adds, 'The one who cleaves to the Lord is one spirit'". "We ask Thee, and pray Thee, and supplicate Thee: make us worthy to partake of the heavenly and awesome mysteries of this sacred and spiritual table." - St. Maximos

Technically, St. Maximos did not leave the Church - he was always in the Church. The point is, he didn't form a new jurisdiction.

Resistance...

Post by Kollyvas »

Um, that's what resistance means...and St. Basil the Great, not in Communion with arians and non-arians?! Again, resistance preserves Orthodoxy while the errant await condemnation. The typology of Orthodox unity is the EUCHARIST. Once Communion is broken, the statement made is SEPARATION FROM THE ERRING "jurisdiction." That does not necessarily constitute "schism" but it does constitute separation, whether it be in a new synodeia or with another local church (INITIALLY THE CHURCH OF ROME IN THE CASE OF ST MAXIMOS)...
