Teachers opposed to homosexuality refuse order to display rainbow flag

A holy war over homosexuality has erupted on the campus of a San Francisco Bay area high school, as five teachers are refusing orders to display a pro-"homosexual" banner because of their religious beliefs.

The rainbow-flag poster with pink triangles and other symbols of homosexual pride carries the message, "This is a safe place to be who you are. This sign affirms that support and resources are available for you in this school."

The banner, designed by the homosexual-Straight Alliance at San Leandro High School south of Oakland, Calif., was ordered by the school board in December to be posted in all classrooms.

"This is not about religion, sex or a belief system,'' district Superintendent Christine Lim, who initiated the policy, told the San Francisco Chronicle. "This is about educators making sure our schools are safe for our children, regardless of their sexual orientation."

Principal Amy Furtado believes every teacher will eventually comply with the order from the district, saying she intends to personally work with those who have thus far refused.

"We work in a public school," she said. "I have no wish to change anyone's personal belief, but we want all kids to feel safe. That's where we have common ground."

Art teacher Tom Laughlin, a homosexual who supervised the design of the poster said he was surprised by the intolerance for homosexuals when he began teaching at the campus five years ago, even being called a "fag" by one student.

"There was a real need to do this," he told the Chronicle. "A lot of students didn't know about homosexual people in general."

Computer-science teacher Rick Styner is proudly displaying two of the banners in his class, one by the entryway so it's the first thing students see upon entering.

"I'm glad that it gets out there instead of being hidden away like a secret,'' Styner said of any intolerance of homosexuality. "As teachers, we have to address these things. Students start to feel unsafe in the classroom."

The five teachers who are refusing to follow the district's orders have not made any public statement about the matter, but a colleague at the school, business teacher Robert Volpa, says he won't hang the poster, even though he agrees with its message.

"I think it's outstanding. Any hate language is not permissible," he said. But he added, "I have a problem with the district mandating anything that could be political."

Homosexuality: A public health disaster

The raging debate over homosexual marriage took another interesting turn this week when Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge M. Brooke Murdock struck down Maryland's state law defining marriage as the union of one man and one woman. The decision, handed down Jan. 20, claimed that Family Law §2-201 unfairly abridged the fundamental marriage rights of the nine homosexual couples who filed the lawsuit.

Judge Murdock was not satisfied with merely striking down the state statute, however. In her written opinion, the circuit court judge went several steps further by claiming that the prohibition of same-sex marriage in no way "rationally relates to a legitimate state interest." Murdock also dismissed the notion that same-sex marriage has any negative influence on traditional marriages or the nuclear family, or that "tradition and social values alone" can bolster what she deemed a "discriminatory statutory classification."

Regrettably, such rationale neglects one of the most critical elements in the emotionally charged debate over same-sex marriage and homosexual behavior in general – public health. As witnessed by Judge Murdock's decision, the issue of health is often turned aside in favor of arguments that hinge more on politics than fact. The problem with such a trend is obvious – the health ramifications of homosexual behavior should be at the forefront of the public policy debate, not on the periphery.

That is the principle reason conservatives should concentrate on both the cultural consequences of homosexual behavior and the public health ramifications. Such an argument will be a winner every time, especially when the facts are clearly presented.

For those who doubt, consider the evidence:

Sexually transmitted diseases – Research gathered by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, or CDC, has found significantly higher rates of rectal gonorrhea, HIV/AIDS and all three strains of Hepatitis among homosexuals. Other studies have likewise linked homosexuality with increased rates of Human Papillomavirus (the leading cause of cervical cancer worldwide), syphilis and anal cancer. Although self-identified homosexuals account for less than 5 percent of the American population, they are the carriers of over 50 percent of HIV/AIDS cases.

Risky behaviors – Campaigns to foster so-called "safe sex" among homosexuals have done nothing to reduce risky behavior. A 1997 CDC report found that among homosexuals who had unprotected anal intercourse and multiple sexual partners, 68 percent were entirely unaware of the HIV status of their partners.

Promiscuity – A large percentage of homosexual men have hundreds of sexual partners throughout their lifetime. According to a profile of 2,583 homosexuals published in the Journal of Sex Research, only 2.7 reported having had sexual relations with only one partner, compared to the largest percentage that claimed to have had between 101 and 500 partners over their lifetime. Compare that to the markedly lower promiscuity rates among married heterosexual couples. According to the latest statistics from the CDC, 92 percent of married males and 93 percent of married females reported having had only one sexual partner over the previous twelve months (presumably their spouses).

Domestic abuse – A survey conducted by the Journal of Social Service Research found that more than half of lesbian respondents reported having been abused by a female partner or lover. Conversely, research has found that married heterosexual women experience the lowest rates of domestic abuse compared to other types of relationships.

Life span – A 1997 study published in the International Journal of Epidemiology found that even under "the most liberal assumptions, homosexual and bisexual men in this urban center are now experiencing a life expectancy similar to that experienced by all men in Canada in the year 1871." The same study estimated that homosexual behavior reduces the lifespan of males by eight to 20 years. Comparatively, the CDC has found that male and female smokers lose an average of 13.2 to 14.5 years of life, respectively.
These findings are not those of conservative pro-family advocacy groups, but of non-partisan, non-political medical journals and organizations devoted to protecting public health. What conclusion can logically be reached other than that homosexual behavior is both hazardous to the public at large and often deadly to those who practice it?

For those who promote homosexual behavior in the name of love and tolerance, it's time to take a hard look at the facts surrounding the lifestyle. If someone is suffering from terminal cancer, is hiding the diagnosis and potential treatments of the disease the loving thing to do? Homosexuality is a cancer that affects every area of life – from the psychological to the spiritual – yet the medical facts are commonly swept under the carpet by politically motivated medical organizations and liberalism as a whole.

Those both inside and outside government ranks who truly value human beings created in the image of God will recognize the importance of being candid about the deadly health risks associated with homosexual behavior. Unlike modern interpretations of tolerance, true agape love has the ultimate physical, psychological and spiritual well-being of the individual at heart.

The good news is change is possible, but it starts with honesty. Homosexuality is not a benign lifestyle preference, but a death-sentence made possible by government neglect of public health concerns. Tragically, Judge Murdock's ruling is another despicable example of a jurisprudence that is eroding the public welfare in the name of tolerance.

Italian Cardinal Condemns EU Resolution on Homosexuals

ROME, January 30, 2006 (LifeSiteNews.com) Italian prelate, Cardinal Camillo Ruini, the Popes Vicar for Rome, yesterday condemned a recent resolution passed by the European Union on homosexuals and same-sex marriage, calling the measure profoundly wrong and full of negative consequences, according to a Catholic Universe report.

Among other things, the resolution, passed January 18, calls for action against member states who fail to implement programs directed at fair treatment of homosexuals in employment and occupation, and to ensure that same-sex partners enjoy the same respect, dignity and protection as the rest of society throughout the EU.

Cardinal Ruini called the EU exploit a moral pressure aimed at weakening the very cornerstones of our civilisation. He added that the Catholic Church denounced equating the rights of homosexual couples with those of true and legitimate families.

The Cardinal, who is also head of the Italian Bishops Conference, condemned the widespread tendency in many countries and also presently in Italy, as different signs show, to introduce norms that, while they do not respond to actual social needs, would compromise the value and functions of the legitimate family, founded on marriage, and the respect due to human life from conception to its natural end.

Italy is preparing for national elections to take place April 9.

Toronto Dominion Bank Financing Effort to Promote Homosexuality in Quebec

TORONTO, Ontario, January 30, 2006 (LifeSiteNews.com) TD Bank Financial Group has entered into a new business deal with the Quebec homosexual Chamber of Commerce (QGCC). The three-year partnership is designed to promote the growth of Quebecs homosexual community.

TD Bank will offer services that meet the specific needs of business leaders in the homosexual and lesbian community in Quebec.

In return, TD Bank will be the principal financial institution for the chamber and its members. The QGCC is the second largest Chamber of Commerce in Canada.

"This arrangement meshes with our values, not only inside the company but within the wider community as well," Edith Ducharme, a bank spokesperson, told the Montreal Gazette on Friday.

TD Bank Financial Group is especially proud to be the first large bank to announce
such a major partnership with this influential association in the Quebec community,
the bank said in a press release Jan. 25.

Ed Clark, president and chief executive officer of TD Bank, publicly revealed the banks support for homosexual and lesbian rights during last years annual meeting in March.

"We must be a company where everyone's sexual orientation is supported. This means that our homosexual and lesbian employees should feel comfortable applying for same-sex benefits, and all employees, whatever their sexual orientation, believe that they will be accepted for who they are," Clark said.

TD Bank will sponsor various events in the homosexual business community, such as the Out for Business conference that will be held in Montreal this summer as part of the OutGames.

It will also sponsor a contest for young homosexual entrepreneurs with a $15,000 prize for "an innovative project that makes a significant contribution to the growth of the homosexual community in Quebec.''

Neither the bank nor the Chamber of Commerce will reveal what financial commitment the bank has made to supporting the QGCC.

Some opponents said they were taking a stand against both the war in Iraq and a military that boots out gays and lesbians, a powerful faction in local politics.

But now, advocates of

the move are trying to woo

the supervisors with

a promise to create a

privately funded dockside museum that will tell the story of minorities in the military, including lesbian, homosexual, bisexual and transgender troops.

“Our feeling was that this would make it a better fit for San Francisco,” said Jim Maloney, director of the Military Education Initiative, a group that supports the lifting of restrictions on gays in the military. “Adding in the component of LGBT service would be obviously quite unique,” he said.

The new plan also calls for an annual peace symposium on the Iowa, which has a storied record of combat in the South Pacific and off the Korean coast.

Franklin D. Roosevelt’s favorite battleship, the Iowa carried him to Casablanca, Morocco, in 1943, en route to a conference of Allied leaders in Tehran, Iran.

In 1989, 47 crew members were killed in a shipboard explosion that officials blamed on a sailor who they said was involved in a failed homosexual relationship. The Navy later backed away from that explanation, ruling that the explosion was an accident and apologizing to the family of the dead sailor.

“That’s a story that deserves to be told,” Maloney said.

THE Anglican church must declare homosexuality a sin, Archbishop of Sydney George Jensen says.

Dr Jensen said accepting homosexual practice "would be to call holy what God calls sin to be repented on", and the church was on a "slippery slope" were it to weaken on the definitions of sin.
His comments, drawn from the Anglican Mainstream website, call for wider debate on the issue within the church.

"Human sexuality is so constitutive of who we are and so central to culture that we are dealing with a major issue," Dr Jensen said.

"Our culture is obsessed by sex so we should not be embarrassed with engaging with this issue. If we did not engage we would be divorced from our culture."

"Scripture declares this to be a matter of life and death," he said.

Dr Jensen said liberal theology was endangering the gospel enterprise of the church.

"If we do not stand here we will not be able to stand anywhere," he said.

He has also joined criticisms of England's laws recognising civil unions as unbiblical, and inconsistent with traditional teaching on marriage.

Same-sex marriage threatened?

Canada's acceptance of homosexual marriage will come before its new and more Conservative Parliament after it is called into its first session, but whether that Parliament is conservative enough to repeal homosexual marriage remains extremely uncertain.

The pro-homosexual Globe and Mail newspaper counted 153 members of Parliament who either voted for the legislation in the old Parliament or indicated they would support it in the new one. This would seem to assure that the expected bill to repeal the approval will fail by a narrow margin.

For myself, I think the issue will not be decided by the MPs at all, but by Christians, conservative Jews and those Muslims who joined in the unsuccessful campaign to defeat the bill last year.

At one point, they assembled 15,000 people on Parliament Hill to oppose homosexual marriage, the biggest such rally in living memory. It was virtually ignored by the media, but not by the MPs. In the end, homosexual marriage was passed 158-133 in a supposedly free vote. But it carried only after Liberal Prime Minister Paul Martin required the 34 members of his Cabinet and their Cabinet secretaries to vote for it. One Cabinet minister resigned rather than vote for the bill. An NDP (i.e., socialist) MP was denied communion in the Catholic church for having done so.

If opponents of homosexual marriage mount an equally aggressive campaign this year, I think many MPs will be either convinced or frightened into supporting repeal. But if they fall victim to the old liberal argument that the public acceptance of sexual profligacy in all its forms is inevitable, then the bill to repeal homosexual marriage will fail.

Conservative leader Stephen Harper opened his election campaign in December by announcing that if elected prime minister he will permit a genuinely free vote, with no coercion on his Cabinet to vote one way or the other. In last month's election, 30 Liberals were defeated who had voted in favor of homosexual marriage. Some were replaced by NDP members who will still favor it, some by Conservatives who will probably not.

Several other factors will influence the forthcoming vote. One is the leaderless state of the Liberal Party. Paul Martin has said he will not take the party into another election. Four top contenders for the succession – former Liberal Cabinet ministers John Manley, Alan Rock and Brian Tobin and former New Brunswick Premier Frank McKenna, who resigned last week as Canadian ambassador in Washington, have one by one announced they don't want the job.

This will diminish the customary Ottawa-control of the party's constituency nomination process, thus opening Liberal nominations to Christian candidates. Tory MPs, who likewise did not need re-nomination for January's election, have been forewarned they too will need to be reaffirmed to run next time.

In most constituencies, the nomination goes to whoever can call out the most delegates to a nomination meeting. Churches can turn out large numbers of people. So if they make their views known to MPs, this will certainly influence how they vote.

Another factor will influence the vote the other way, namely the failure of the Conservative Party to win seats in Toronto, Montreal or the core area of Vancouver. This "urban barrier" against the Tories, wrote Lawrence Solomon in the Financial Post, is rooted in one area of legislation alone, namely sex. Urban voters have no quarrel with fiscal conservatism, he writes, only social conservatism.

Basing his calculations on the premise that 5 percent of Canadians are either homosexual or strong homosexual supporters, and most live in cities, he discerned 10,000 votes in every city constituency who are unalterably opposed to Harper's party, plus several thousand more women, who fear the closet influence of the pro-life movement within the party.

So if Harper wants to win the cities, says Solomon, all he need do is lead the homosexual Pride Day parade in Toronto. "The organizers would welcome him with open arms, as would the country."

Since the proposal was apparently made seriously, it tells us more about Solomon than about Harper. First, it tells us that he assumes that Harper (much like himself, no doubt) believes that in the sexual sphere, right and wrong simply do not exist. Second, it tells us that in Solomon's view, "the country" consists of Toronto, Montreal and downtown Vancouver. He might discover that Calgary and Edmonton, both pushing 1 million population, voted solidly Tory. He might also discover it was Harper's Tories, after all, who formed the government.
