Homosexual dramas scoop up Golden Globes in LA
01/17/2006 17:33
Brokeback Mountain is likely to be a box office flop for many people are not interested in homosexual problems

homosexual cowboy drama "Brokeback Mountain" has won the Golden Globe Awards in Los Angeles. Brokeback Mountain also won best screenplay, best original song and best director for Ang Lee.

Based on a short story by novelist Annie Proulx, Brokeback is the wrenching story of two macho cowboys who, despite themselves, begin a romance in 1963 and pursue it during stolen moments over the next two decades. The other nominees for best drama were The Constant Gardener, Good Night, and Good Luck, A History of Violence and Match Point.

The Globes are awarded by the relatively small Hollywood Foreign Press Association, which has about 80 members, compared with the 5,800 film professionals eligible to vote for the Oscars.

Hollywood's first major show of the awards season, the Golden Globes is viewed as a key predictor of Oscar success. The Academy voters have until Saturday to pick their nominees for the Oscars, which will be presented on March 5.

However, distributors are quite worried about "Brokeback Mountain." They say that many people may not be interested in homosexual problems. They fear that the movie may not do well in the box office.

For television viewers who have grown accustomed to stiff, dull awards shows, the Globes delivered some entertainment with its trophies. Whether the alcohol served to audience members as they waited helped, only the bartenders know for sure, according cantonrep.com.

The best dramatic actor award went to Philip Seymour Hoffman, who won it for Capote. Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon were both honoured for their performances in the musical Walk the Line.

"Walk the Line," though it offers as many dramatic moments as tuneful ones in telling the tale of Cash and June Carter, took the prize for best motion picture - musical or comedy. Accepting the award, producer Cathy Konrad credited her husband, James Mangold, the film's director, for sustaining the "decadelong journey it took us to make this movie." Her fellow producer James Keach offered a special shout out to Cash and Carter, who died within months of each other in 2003. "I'm so sad that John and June didn't get to see this movie that they wanted so much to be made," he said.

Felicity Huffman, best known for Desperate Housewives, won best dramatic film actress for Transamerica, Sofia news agency reports.

Other nominees were Maria Bello for A History of Violence, Gwyneth Paltrow for Proof, Charlize Theron for North Country and Zhang Ziyi for Memoirs of a Geisha.

"I would like to salute the men and women who brave ostracism, alienation and a life lived on the margins to become who they really are," Huffman said.

Monday was a triumphant night for films dealing with homosexuality and transsexuality, with acting honors going to Felicity Huffman, who played a man preparing for sex-change surgery in "Transamerica" and Philip Seymour Hoffman, who starred as homosexual author Truman Capote in "Capote," says seattlepi.nwsource.com.

I was given the best part of my life, basically, and I know that," an emotional Hoffman, a Broadway star and a favourite of film critics for years, said in his acceptance speech.

Recent Golden Globes ceremonies showcased Australia's leading female stars such as Nicole Kidman, Cate Blanchett, Naomi Watts and Rachel Griffiths, but this year they were all not present. Eric Bana and Julian McMahon were not nominated, but were prominent on the red carpet.

Americans Will Reject homosexual golden globes

AMERICAN MOVIEGOERS WILL REJECT THE homosexual GOLDEN GLOBES, CHRISTIAN MEDIA PUNDIT OPINES
Movieguide.org ^ | Dec 16, 2005

Posted on 12/28/2005 8:28:19 AM PST by Zender500

Dr. Ted Baehr, founder of the Christian Film & Television Commission™, one of the top advocacy groups in Hollywood, predicts that Americans moviegoers will reject the top movie choices for the 63rd annual Golden Globes Awards.

"They've already rejected three of the five choices for Best Drama," Dr. Baehr said about the Hollywood Foreign Press Association's choices, which include BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN; THE CONSTANT GARDENER; GOOD NIGHT, AND GOOD LUCK; A HISTORY OF VIOLENCE; and MATCH POINT.

"These movies aren't that good," said Dr. Baehr, who noted that the Commission's flagship, MOVIEGUIDE®, at its Annual Faith & Values Awards Gala, has a better track record than the Globes and any other film critic association, when it comes to picking the kind of award-winning movies that Americans really want to see.

He predicted that moviegoers will reject both BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN, an explicit, "boring" movie about two homosexual cowboys punching sheep, and each other, and Woody Allen's new "slow-paced" atheist drama, MATCH POINT, when they open wide next month.

"These kinds of boring, politically correct movies tend to make much less than $10 million at the box office," he said. "This is not even a drop in the bucket when compared to the box office numbers for a movie like THE LION, THE WITCH AND THE WARDROBE, the classic Christian created by C.S. Lewis, which made more than $67 million in three days.

"Do you want your daughter or niece seeing two cowboys sodomize each other?" Dr. Baehr asked, referring to Ang Lee's BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN.

Dr. Baehr said that THE CONSTANT GARDENER is a "left-wing diatribe" and that GOOD NIGHT, AND GOOD LUCK is "a distorted, revisionist picture" of the fight against Communism in the 1950s.

"A HISTORY OF VIOLENCE is just a very odd choice," Dr. Baehr added. "I don't know what to make of the mindset that would pick such a mediocre, unsuccessful movie like this for an award."

Finally, Dr. Baehr said that, while he can see why the HFPA nominated THE PRODUCERS and WALK THE LINE for Best Musical or Comedy, one of their picks, THE SQUID AND THE WHALE, has no music and is a heavy family drama, not a comedy.

"The mostly out of work people who pick the Golden Gropes must be getting senile," he concluded. "Of course, in reality, there are less than 100 members in the HFPA and less than 90 of them can vote. Many of them don't even work in the news media anymore. Furthermore, they only add about two members each year. The whole thing is a sham which the Hollywood studios promote because it helps sell tickets."

golden globes Spark Righteous Anger

Golden Globe winners spark righteous anger

Jake Gyllenhaal and Heath Ledger in Focus Features' Brokeback Mountain - 2005
From Chris Ayres in Los Angeles

CHRISTIAN groups led a furious campaign against Hollywood yesterday, accusing the Golden Globe Awards of promoting films with homosexual or “leftist” themes to serve a political agenda.

The criticism was made after Brokeback Mountain, a film about the forbidden love between homosexual Wyoming cowboys, won four awards. Other winners included Philip Seymour Hoffman, named Best Actor for his portrayal of the homosexual writer Truman Capote; and Felicity Huffman, the Desperate Housewives actress who played a transsexual with a homosexual prostitute son in Transamerica.

“Once again, the media elites are proving that their pet projects are more important than profit,” Janice Crouse, of Concerned Women for America, said. “None of the three movies — Capote, Transamerica or Brokeback Mountain — is a box office hit. Brokeback Mountain has barely topped $25 million (£14.2 million) in ticket sales. If America isn’t watching these films, why are they winning the awards?”

The criticism from the American heartland carried more weight than usual this year because Hollywood suffered the biggest decline in attendance in two decades last year. Some of the few box office hits of the year were films such as The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, which appealed strongly to Christian audiences.

Oscar pundits are now questioning whether the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will also reward Brokeback Mountain, potentially souring Hollywood’s relationship with the American ticketbuying public even further. Members of the Academy must hand in their nomination forms by Saturday. The shortlist will be announced on January 31 and the ceremony will be held on March 5.

Religious groups also pointed to the alleged political agenda of winners including George Clooney, who won for his supporting role in Syriana, a film about the ethical pitfalls of the oil business; and Mary Louise Parker, who was rewarded for her performance in Weeds, a television comedy about a suburban mother turned marijuana dealer.

Much of the anger was directed at the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA), the group of 92 journalists from non-American publications who hand out the Golden Globe Awards. The Times, along with many other large overseas publications, is not represented at the HFPA.

The non-profit HFPA collects as much as $5.7 million from selling the broadcast rights to the ceremony, which is consistently one of the three highest-rated awards shows in the United States, along with the Academy Awards and the Grammys. However, reports alleging cronyism at the HFPA were thought to contribute to a 40 per cent decline in viewership last year.

Right-wing radio talk show hosts also took pot shots at the Globes yesterday. Stephen Bennett, of Straight Talk Radio, said: “When Hollywood is pumping out anti-family movies with sexually explicit, twisted and perverse themes that glorify homosexuality, transsexuality and every other kind of sexual immorality — then awarding itself for doing so — Middle America better take note.

“Last night Hollywood exposed its own corrupt agenda. [It] is no doubt out on a mission to homosexualise America.” The British winners at the Globes were some of the most conventional, with Hugh Laurie, 47, winning Best Actor in a Television Series for House. The other big British winner of the night was Rachel Weisz, 35, who collected the award for Best Supporting Dramatic Actress for The Constant Gardener, an adaptation of the bestselling John le Carr é novel.

Britons who failed to win their categories included Polly Walker, 40, a former member of the Royal Shakespeare Company, who starred in the BBC/HBO joint venture Rome. She lost the Best Actress in a TV Drama award to Geena Davis, who played a female US president in Commander in Chief.

Reese Witherspoon’s performance as June Carter in Walk the Line won her the Best Actress in a Comedy or Musical award, for which Keira Knightley, 21, had been nominated for her role as Elizabeth Bennet in Pride & Prejudice.

"same sex marriage" Ban Struck Down

QUEERLY BELOVED
Same-sex marriage ban struck down
Judge rules no state interest to uphold traditional matrimony

A judge in Maryland struck down the state's 33-year-old law banning same-sex marriage in response to a lawsuit brought by the American Civil Liberties Union.

Baltimore trial judge M. Brooke Murdock ruled the law discriminates on the basis of sex, violating the 1972 Maryland Declaration of Rights, referred to as Maryland's Equal Rights Amendment.

"This is such an exciting moment," said Lisa Polyak, one of 19 plaintiffs.

"Our participation in this lawsuit has always been about family protections for our children. Tonight, we will rest a little easier knowing that those protections are within reach," she said, according to the Associated Press.

Before voters ratified the ERA amendment in November 1972, Maryland's attorney general issued an opinion that a ban on same-sex marriage was implicit in the state's laws. The next year, the General Assembly passed a law stating: "Only a marriage between a man and a woman is valid in this State."

But the court today found no "compelling interest" to ban same-sex marriage and was "unable to even find that the prohibition of same-sex marriage rationally relates to a legitimate state interest."

Murdock wrote: "The court concludes that the prohibition of same-sex marriages is not rationally related to the state interest in the rearing of biological children by married, opposite-sex parents."

The court also stated it was "unable to find that preventing same-sex marriage rationally relates to the [sic] Maryland's interest in promoting the best interest of children."

Murdock stated that "the General Assembly may have assumed that opposite-sex marriages less frequently end in divorce, that opposite-sex couples are better parents, or that opposite-sex couples focus more on their children's education." But, he said, "these assumptions are not rational speculation; they are broad unsupported generalizations that do not establish a rational relation between same-sex marriage and the state's interest in promoting procreation, child-rearing, and the best interest of children."

Rev. Rob Schenck, president of the National Clergy Council, called the ruling "absurd."

"If there's no good reason for exclusively heterosexual marriage, then there's no good reason for an exclusively two-person marriage," he said. "Or, for that matter, there's no good reason to limit marriage to two human beings."

Shenk said the judge is "making a political and social statement, not an interpretation of the law. She should be impeached for dereliction of duty."

Condemning the decision, Mathew D. Staver, president and general counsel of the public-interest legal group Liberty Counsel, said it was "outrageous for a judge to morph into a legislator."

"It is even more incredible to conclude that there is no conceivable basis to promote marriage between a man and a woman," he said. "To conclude that there is no relationship between male-female marriage and child-rearing, or the best interest of children, shows a lack of respect to the legislature, to common sense and to social science."

Staver said the decision illustrates why each state and the United States must pass constitutional amendments to preserve marriage between one man and one woman.

"Marriage should not depend on the stroke of a single judge's pen."

The decision will be appealed, said Staver, noting Liberty Counsel will file a friend-of-the-court brief.

Canada--gays rush to altar

Gays rush to altar, fearing marriage law at risk
Updated Thu. Jan. 19 2006 9:48 AM ET

CTV.ca News Staff

homosexual couples across Canada are rushing to the altar, worried that a possible Conservative government will reverse the legalization of same sex marriages.

David Lockwood and Jason Cass got married Wednesday in Toronto.

"We decided Saturday night (to get married) Wednesday afternoon. The election is Monday. We wanted to do it before Monday," Cass said.

Conservative Leader Stephen Harper said at the beginning of the election campaign that he would allow a free vote on the issue if the Conservatives form the next government.

Pastor Mickey Wilson in Edmonton is scheduled to marry five same-sex couples in 10 days.

Toronto's city hall wedding co-ordinator, Louise Code, said there are 10 same-sex marriages booked for Friday.

"We've noticed a considerable surge in same-sex weddings that wish to be performed," she said.

So has Winnipeg wedding planning company Pride Bride.

Co-owner Rita Leonard told CTV's Canada AM Thursday her company has been getting many more calls than usual with the looming election. Some couples are considering marriage as a political statement and others are just looking at holding their weddings sooner, she said.

"For the most part we're telling people to be cautious, you know, take your time, don't rush into anything," Leonard said.

"Nothing is going to change overnight," added Pride Bride's marriage commissioner, Paula Rutledge. "We have lots of time, and we don't feel that people have to panic."

Ontario Health Minister George Smitherman and his partner are also considering pushing up their marriage date if Harper becomes prime minister.

"We're concerned that the rights we currently have that are constitutionally guaranteed are put at risk by Mr. Harper," Smitherman said.

Same-sex marriage was legalized by the Liberal government last spring when it changed the definition of marriage to include such unions.

Rutledge said she doesn't think revoking the rights would be easy or fair.

"You can't put the genie back in the bottle, and for us to have no equality with a similar same-sex couple that lives next door to us, I just can't see it."

The wedding rush is occurring as Vote Marriage Canada, a supporter of traditional marriage, released on Wednesday a list of 50 election candidates it is endorsing. The list includes Conservative candidates such as Stephen Harper, Jason Kenney and Vic Toews, who are opposed to same-sex marriage.

The group's leader, former Conservative MP Grant Hill, called for a free vote on the issue.

"Win or not, I'll be satisfied with the results of a free vote," he said.

Another group, Equipping Christians for the Public Square, is encouraging Christians to vote for candidates who favour traditional marriage.

"We're saying look at the candidates and those candidates who are going to defend that institution (of marriage), those are the ones we're encouraging you to vote for," Rev. Kirstin Emanuel, a Presbyterian minister and president of the group, told CTV's Mike Duffy.

Liberal Leader Paul Martin also brought up the issue Wednesday. He said Harper is "out of step" with Canadian values on issues including same sex-marriage and abortion.

"The question isn't change. It's change for what? I don't believe that Canadians want to roll back the clock."

Some are questioning whether a Harper government would have the constitutional right to redefine marriage as being a union between a man and a woman.

"Ultimately, it's clear that it won't work to try and take away equal marriage,'' said Laurie Arron, director of advocacy for Egale Canada, a homosexual and lesbian rights organization said. He added that courts in eight provinces have already ruled it's unconstitutional to exclude same-sex couples from civil marriage.

Justice Minister Irwin Cotler said the concerns of homosexual couples aren't unwarranted.

"What's troubling people isn't the immediate effect of what Mr. Harper intends, but the cast of mind that is so quick to over ride the constitution and charter of rights," he said on Countdown with Mike Duffy.

Duffy also questioned whether the Liberal Party has a double standard because 32 of its MPs voted against same sex marriage last year.

Cotler reiterated the Liberals are concerned about Harper's lack of respect for the Charter of Rights.

Homosexual Easter at the White House?
'LGBT families' urged to crash Bushes' annual egg-roll event

An advocacy group for the so-called lesbian, homosexual, bisexual and transgender community is urging its supporters to be the first in line this year at the White House Easter Egg Roll to show "family visibility" to the nation.

Mark Tooley, writing in the Weekly Standard, says a church-based homosexual-rights group, Soulforce, sent an e-mail to supporters giving instructions for the event.

"On April 17, 2006, when the White House lawn is opened to families for the Annual Easter Egg Roll, imagine if the first 1,000 families onto the lawn were LGBT [lesbian, homosexual, bisexual, transgender] families," said the Jan. 4 e-mail. Once America sees the White House lawn awash in LGBT families, "there will be no going back," Soulforce promised.

Tooley claims it's the first time anyone has tried to "exploit the annual White House Easter Egg Roll for political purposes."

Soulforce regularly protests church events to demand denominations change their policies on homosexuality, using the principles of Martin Luther King Jr. and Mahatma Gandhi. The organization was begun by Mel White, once a writer for Christian pastors who later embraced homosexuality and became a clergyman in the "homosexual" Metropolitan Community Church. Soulforce is planning to protest at Focus on the Family in Colorado this summer.

According to the e-mail, the group is asking "LGBT families" to arrive at the White House gate the night before the April event to be sure to be the first ones in. Volunteers will be available to save places for those who cannot spend the night.

Supporters reportedly will arrive with special "non-political" T-shirts to identify themselves as "LGBT."

The annual Easter Egg Roll dates back to President Rutherford B. Hayes.

"The media will be there (they are always there for the egg roll) and millions of Americans – many for the first time – will meet our families," the Soulforce e-mail explained. "This is an amazing opportunity to reach homes in blue states and red states with positive images of our families participating in this great American family tradition.

"This event will be like nothing anyone has ever seen before. The White House lawn – t he Bush [italics in original] White House lawn – will, quite unexpectedly, be filled with homosexual and lesbian families. This is something people will be talking about for a long time, an event that will make history!"

An organization called Family Pride is working with Soulforce to recruit participants for the event. A page on the group's website warns people not to post information on a searchable website for fear the Bush administration might find out and attempt to "keep our families from participating."

Students Ban Christians Over gays

Students ban Christians in row over gays
By Ruth Gledhill, Religion Correspondent

A UNIVERSITY Christian Union has been suspended and had its bank account frozen after refusing to open its membership to people of all religions.

The Christian Union, an evangelical student organisation, has instructed lawyers and is threatening court proceedings against the Birmingham Guild of Students.

The Birmingham Christian Union has more than 100 members who attend meetings regularly and has been functioning at the university for 76 years.

Members claim the actions have been taken against them after they refused on religious grounds to make “politically correct” changes to their charitable constitution, including explicitly mentioning people who are lesbian, homosexual, bisexual or transgendered.

The Christian Union was advised that the use of the words “men” and “women” in the constitution were causing concern because they could be seen as excluding transsexual and transgendered people.

Difficulties arose after the organisation Christians in Sport, whose supporters include Jonathan Edwards, the Olympic gold medallist, attempted to book a room in the name of the Christian Union. After checking the union’s constitution, the Guild of Students objected to a number of clauses.

Andy Weatherley, Christian Union staff worker in Birmingham, said: “The guild insists the Christian Union constitution must be amended to include mandatory clauses, insisting on more control by the guild and open membership to those who would not call themselves Christians.”

At a recent guild meeting Matthew Crouch, of the Christian Union, appealed against derecognition. He said: “All guild members can attend our meeting but only members can vote,” but Stuart Mathers, a guild vice-president, said that all student groups have to follow guild council policy. Birmingham University Christian Union is affiliated to the University and Colleges’ Christian Fellowship. Pod Bhogal, its communications director, said: “We support the Birmingham Christian Union. We would not dream of telling a Muslim group or a political society how to elect their leaders or who could or could not become a member. The same applies to a Christian Union.”
