On Infant's early death according to the Fathers

Post by Jean-Serge »

I have had a discussion with many Orthodox about the fate of children that die before being baptized.

Some told me : they are going to hell. Do you have any Patristic text saying this.

Another told me : :their soul go to the Empire of the North, where they are not in paradise because they cannot see God's face. He told me he read this in books published by Jordanville. It lokks like the catholic limbos

Finally, I think they go to paradise becaise they committed no personal sins. This was also the opinion of Saint Gregory of Nysse.

My Spiritual father says about dieing without Baptism;

  • It is written in the Scriptures, "I will have mercy upon whom I will have mercy." So these Judgments are in the hand of God. It is better not to worry about such things. -
    also he wasnt a new born but The Holy Martyr Thyrsus died without Baptism and was glorified by the church as a saint, he died a catachumen.........

Catechumens are actually given a full Church funeral service and burial. Also infants who have had the naming ceremony but are not yet Baptized are considered Catechumens, so their lot is that of the Faithful. Just thought I would add that in as I once met a priest that did not know this.

It is in the Canons that catechumens, if they die should be counted among the faithful and given a full Church funeral service.

St. Gregory the Theologian (Gregory of Nazianzus) says that:
. . . they will be neither glorified nor condemned by the just Judge, since they have not been sealed. They are not evil and have suffered more harm than they have caused. For a person's failure to deserve punishment does not mean that he therefore deserves honors, nor does his failure to deserve honors mean that he deserves punishment.

In which speech or book does Saint Gregory tell this? I have looked for this quotoation but I did not find...
