President Putin attended Divine service at the Transfiguration Cathedral in Yakutsk on Christmas Eve

President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin on a working visit in Yakutia attended the Great Compline service in the Transfiguration cathedral church in Yakutsk.

Bishop Zosima of Yakutsk and Lensk met the head of the state at the entrance to the church.

The President stood through the service together with the parishioners living in Yakutsk. When Vladimir Putin was going out of the church, they greeted him with the Nativity of Christ, wished him happiness and good health and thanked him for his visit to Yakutia and for not being afraid of the fifty-grade frost.

Representatives of more than 120 nationalities live in Yakutia, but the overwhelming majority of them are Orthodox Christians.

The Cathedral of Transfiguration is the oldest working church in Yakutsk. It was built in 1838-45 on the funds of the merchants Alexey and Maxim Solovievs who realized an initiative of their father Mikhail who donated all his money for the construction of the cathedral.

The church was almost completely demolished in 1930s, and only a half-ruined first floor survived. Construction works began in 1998, and the church was completely restored in 2001. It was consecrated on 19 August 2001, the feast of the Transfiguration of the lord.

The Yakutsk diocese was founded in 1870 and revived on 23 February 1993. There are 49 parishes, 17 churches, 20 prayer houses, 10 chapels and a convent in the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) at present.

His Holiness Patriarch Alexy greets cosmonauts on the Nativity of Christ

On 9 January 2006, after Christmas show held for children in the State Kremlin Palace, His Holiness Patriarch Alexy II of Moscow and All Russia gave an interview to the representatives of mass media and told them that he had a communication session with the cosmonauts in orbit of the International space station.

Such sessions traditionally take place on the Nativity of Christ and on the first day of the Bright Week. The crew consisting of Russian cosmonaut Valery Tokarev and US astronaut Bill McArthur has been in space since October 2005. They will come back in March 2006.

‘The commander of the space ship told me he always wore a silver cross and took an icon of the Holy Virgin with him. People hope for God’s help both on earth and in space’, the Patriarch said.

World polar community celebrates Christmas at the church of the Holy Trinity in Antarctica

Russian polar explorers of the Bellingshausen station invited their colleagues from national Antarctic expeditions of China, Uruguay and Chili to celebrate Christmas. It was reported by deputy chief of the Russian Antarctic expedition Vyacheslav Marianov from the Arctic and Antarctic research institute.

He said that guests of Russian polar explorers wanted ‘to attend festival Liturgy at the Church of the Holy Trinity’. It is the only Orthodox church built in the southernmost continent and consecrated in February 2004. His Holiness Patriarch Alexy II of Moscow and All Russia blessed the building of the church in Antarctica.

The wooden church for thirty parishioners was built on the donations and then transferred to the Russian Orthodox Church. It is the first church in two-hundred-year history of exploring the sixth continent. The divine service was conducted by the rector of the church Hieromonk Kallistrat (Romanenko) from the Laura of the Holy Trinity and St. Sergius.

After the divine service representatives of the world community met in a mess-room of the Bellingshausen station, where a festive table was laid out near the Christmas tree. According to Marianov the cook tried to present national cuisine in the best possible way. The Christmas trees were also decorated at the other four acting Russian polar stations in Antarctica, the representative of the polar science headquarters noted.

Parishioners of Russian Orthodox parish in Reykjavik organize Christmas performance for children

On 7 January 2006, on the feast of the Nativity of Christ, parishioners of the community of St. Nicholas organized Christmas performance for children of their compatriots at the premises of the ‘Mir’ Icelandic-Russian society. This children’s festival united dozens of Russian-speaking families residing in the Icelandic capital and its suburbs. Children sang songs and read poems in Russian, danced round the Christmas tree and became participants of the performance. Certainly, they received Christmas gifts.

Orthodox divine service was celebrated in the building of the Catholic Cathedral of Christ in Reykjavik at night from 6 to 7 January 2006. It was conducted by Rev. Timofei Zolotusky, Rector of the Parish of St. Nicholas of the Moscow Patriarchate.

On Christmas eve, the Royal Hours, Vespers and the Divine Liturgy of St. Basil the Great were conducted in the temporary Orthodox chapel at the premises provided by the Russian Embassy for the time while the question of building Orthodox church in Icelandic capital is under decision.

Among the present were: V. Poliakov, Russian charge d'affaires in Iceland, Rev. Hialti Torkelson, assistant to the Roman Catholic bishop of Iceland, and numerous believers from Russia, Serbia, Bulgaria, Slovakia, Georgia and Ukraine. Multinational Orthodox choir ‘Manasseh’ sang at the divine service.

Reports on the divine service and children’s festival were translated in the news on different channels of the Icelandic television. The rector of the Orthodox parish in Reykjavik gave an interview to the Icelandic television where he told about traditions of celebrating Christmas in Russia, history of the parish and its heavenly protector St. Nicholas.

Parishioners of Tver Ascension Cathedral organize Christmas celebrations for children from orphanages

On 5 January 2006, charitable Christmas celebration for the children from orphanages and children’s homes will be held in the House of Officers of Tver and Tver region.

Some 250 children will be invited to the celebrations organized by the school at the Cathedral of the Ascension with the blessing of its Rector Archimandrite Adrian (Ulianov). The program includes congratulations from the priest, ‘Morozko’ performance, games, competitions, and attractions. In conclusion all children will get Christmas gifts.

Over one hundred pupils of boarding schools are baptized in Stavropol

On 9 January 2006, Bishop Feofan of Stavropol and Vladikavkaz baptized over one hundred pupils of boarding schools in the cathedral church of St.Andrew the Apostle.

The Stavropol diocese press service reports that children aged 7-18 came to the city from the Petrovsky and Novoselitsky districts of the Stavropol territory. It was children’s decision to become Orthodox Christians and they were introduced to the fundamentals of the Orthodox faith.

Students of the Stavropol Theological seminary stood Godparents. Bishop of Stavropol and Vladikavkaz noted that care for children lacking parental care was natural for the Russian Orthodox Church. ‘The Stavropol diocese cares for the orphans both spiritually and socially by opening Orthodox orphanages’, Bishop Feofan said.

After Baptism, pupils of the boarding schools went to a Christmas party given by the bishop. Attending the party were over seven hundred children: pupils of Sunday parish schools, orphans and children from poor families from the Stavropol Territory and other subjects of the Federation that are part of the diocese.

Moscow government sends Christmas gifts to the parishes in China

The Orthodox Fellowship of Ss Apostles Peter and Paul (Moscow Patriarchate) in Hong Kong asked the Department of International Relations of the Moscow government and the Yuri Dolgoruky Foundation in Support of Compatriots to help with the decoration of the newly opened home churches in Hong Kong and Shanjen. The initiative was blessed by His Eminence Metropolitan Kirill of Smolensk and Kaliningrad and supported by the Russian Embassy in the People’s Republic of China and the General Consulate of Russia in Hong Kong. The Foundation in Support of Compatriots presented the Fellowship of Ss Apostles Peter and Paul church utensils manufactured at the ‘Sofrino’ Arts Production enterprise of the Russian Orthodox Church. Church utensils and liturgical vestments will be used in the home churches of Ss Apostles Peter and Paul in Hong Kong and of St.Sergius of Radonezh in Shanjen.

His Grace Bishop Mark of Yegorievsk, deputy chairman of the Department for External Church Relations sent letters of gratitude to the leadership of the ‘Tasis’ enterprise, which arranged free shipment of church utensils to China of the eve of Christmas-tide in 2006.
