A Woman Healed on the Sabbath

Post by Olympiada »

Greetings Friends,
I would like to discuss today's Gospel reading with anybody who is interseted, A Woman Healed on the Sabbath. In particular two verses pierced my heart:

But the ruler of the synagogue answered with indignation, because Jesus had healed on the Sabbath Luke 13:14

Can you believe the ruler of the synagogue answered our Lord with indignation? I can not. This hurts my heart.
And then

And when He said these things, all His adversaries were put to shame Luke 13:17

Our Lord had adversaries?! Who would be adverse to the Lord?! This also pierces my heart. I would appreciate any discussion of this.

Maybe the rulers loved the law more than their neighbors, so they could not recognize the Lord? If they loved the people being healed, they would have been happy.

St. Nicodemus and St. Joseph of Arimathea loved their neighbors, so they sought the Lord. They were kind and gentle with Christ's body - and were converted. They were probably confused by healing on the Sabbath as well, but the love of the people being healed warmed their hearts to the truth. To the pure, all things are pure.

When we pray Psalm 50 (KJV 51), whole burnt offering alone (love of 'god' or law) is rejected. But when the heart is clean, we offer the sacrafice of righteousness - both burnt offering and whole burnt offering (love of neighbor and God). How can we love God who we don't see, when we don't love our neighbor whom we do see.

Jesus forgave all our ignorance on the cross. We need to forgive and seek forgiveness.
