Milton: "Welcome Your Holiness to my new Television Program "Meet
Milton!"
His Holiness Alexi II - "It a pleasure to be here Milton especially
because I know so many good and kind and devout American Catholics
and Presbyterians and Episcopalians and Jews and Baptists are
watching. Thank you."
Milton - "It's a pleasure to have you. Let's get started. The Moscow
Patriarchate's Web Site www.mospat.ru has a very interesting
biography of Your Holiness. It lists many of your achievements which
are quite impressive. I was particularly taken by all of the awards
you have won since your appointment to the Patriarchate. One of
these awards reads " His Holiness was awarded with the national
prize of 'Man of the Year' for' Outstanding People of the Decade
(1990-2000) Promoting Prosperity and Fame of Russia.' "
[See www.mospat.ru/Biogrphy]
His Holiness Alexi II - "Yes. I recall receiving that award. I was
out meeting with a member of the board of Trustees of the National
Military Foundation of which I am Head.[See www.mospat.ru/Biogrphy]
I received a phone call congratulating me for this award from
President Yeltsin. I was elated."
Milton - "That's terrific. Promoting prosperity and fame is
something St. Paul the Apostle would be very proud of you about
since he does say, "and having food and raiment let us be therewith
content." That's what prosperity and fame are all about and after
all, President Putin is a close runner-up in winning this very same
reward!"
His Holiness Alexi II -"Thank you Milton. This is what nationhood is
all about as you say. Of course morality and spirituality count too."
Milton - "Of course. After all 'morality and spirituality' is your
field. Now on the "Local News" section of www.mospat.ru it is
written that your: 'Bishops Georgy of Nizhniy Novgorod and Arzamas
took part in a solemn ceremony of Taking the Oath by the first-year
students of the Nizhniy Novgorod Academy of the Ministry of Internal
Affairs on 10 October 2005. After taking the oath 312 persons have
become full members of the militia. Present at the ceremony were
chief of the Nizhniy Novgorod MIA Academy, lieutenant-general
V.Kanygin, head of the directorate for cooperation with security
bodies of the Nizhniy Novgorod government, A.Makarov, head of
administration of the Oka region, V.Yashkov, deputy head of the
Nizhniy Novgorod regional GUVD, A.Ulyanov, and others. After the
oath was taken, Bishop Georgy addressed the students with the
parting words: ‘Today you have taken your oath to the Fatherland.
People who dedicated their lives to the service of the people and
the state have been in demand in all times. The very principle of
ministry has been laid as the foundation of the life of the Orthodox
Church.' It all sounds quite appropriate for these bishops of yours
and all else who were stated as being present. But forgive me Your
Holiness, I can't help feeling a bit suspicious of who
those 'others' were who were present at this most solemn occasion."
[See www.mospat.ru/"Local News"]
His Holiness Alexy II - "I can assure you Milton, that
those 'others' were religious officials and nothing but religious
officials! People are just too dam I mean darn quick to jump to
conclusions. It really makes me have righteous indignation."
Milton - "I completly sympathize with you. For after all, Your
Holiness, 'righteousness' is your line of work too, as well
as 'other-worldliness.' Now on your Web Site Biography it is stated
that you 'signed a number of joint documents that have laid the
foundation for the development of cooperation of the Church with
health and social security systems, the armed forces, law
enforcement, justice and culture institutions, and other
state structures.' Would you care to comment on this 'Church-and-
State' ministry of yours?" [See www.mospat.ru/"Church News"]
His Holiness Alexi II - "As I point out in my doctrinal statement on
www.mospat.ru, I 'adhere with conviction to the principle of
separation between the mission of the Church and the functions of
the state and of non-interference in the affairs of each other. At
the same time I believe that the salutary ministry of the Church and
the ministry of the state to society demand mutually free
cooperation between the church, state and public institutions.' "
[See www.mospat.ru]
Milton - "Yes the 'demands' of the State have always been uppermost
in the hierarchical consciousness of the Moscow Patriarchate at
least from a 20th Century 'Sergianist' point of view. And of course
we recall the words of Christ Himself, 'Render unto Caesar the
things which are God's."
His Holiness Alexi II - "Precisely Milton. This has always
been...what? What was that again? I...I nev..."
Milton - "And now a word from our back-to-back sponsors: "Stoli
Vodka and Russi Tobacco." We'll be right back folks. STAY TUNED!"
