What is the status of Universalism in Trad Churches?

Post by gimme your lunch money »

I was wondering: what is the status of Universalism in Traditionalist Churches? Are there any official anathemas against it, or is it considered a permissible doctrine? By "universalism", I don't mean the contemporary (and rather vulgar) notion that "all paths lead to God". What I mean is the belief that all creatures in hell, even if it be after a ba-jillion years, will be saved in the end. I know the consensus among many people is that a secular Emperor's (i.e. Justinian) decision is not binding on the Church (God forbid!), and therefore the anathema's which are "tacked on" to those of Constantinople II by him are quite disposable.....that's even assuming that those anathema's even had anything to do with that Council (rather than a previous home synod) to begin with.

fire away.....but please be gentle on my little self, I'm a "newbie" as far as Old Calendarism goes

Well, no.....no "group" believes this, as you put it. There is no Orthodox Church which officially sanctions this belief to my knowledge. But it IS allowed as a "theologoumenon" (i.e. personal belief), as long as it is not dogmatized.....at least as far as mainline Orthodoxy goes. St. Gregory of Nyssa and St. Clement of Alexandria were outspoken universalists....as well as Frs. Pavel Florensky and Sergius Bulgakov among countless other theologians. And if i'm not mistaken, I do believe the Ecumenical Patriarch also holds to universalism as a theologoumenon.

....p.s. no you weren't harsh....yet anywayz

A simple "anathema" would have been fine, thank you.....

ANATHEMA ANATHEMA

This is apocatastasis and was defended by Origen and condemned by the Councils!!!

Exact, the Apocatastasis (Origenism) was condemned by the Church.

As for the Father Sergei Bulgakov, his teachings (about "Sophia") were condemned by the ROCOR Bishops in 1935
