Another one bites the dust. The "book of life" keeps getting smaller and smaller.

It's hard not to laugh at that last statement.

What's funny is that in another age, people listened when they heard that...

I may not be in communion with Metropolitan Valentin but it is a sobering thing to be threatened with excommunication from the Church of Christ by an Orthodox bishop.
As an aside, Tom's statement makes me ask: isn't an ex- communication simply a placing of someone "out of"[ex] communion and the Mysteries of the Church on earth? I believe it is leaving someone to the mercy of God's judgement as to their place in the Book of Life while placing them in a position outside the Holy Mysteries to impress upon them the need for repentance and to show others how serious obstinacy in sin is in the eyes of the Church.
In this point of view, excommunication is not judgementalism run amok but merciful discipline. One suffers the punishment of the Church now to bring the soul to repentance before it suffers the eternal punishment of the age to come when repentance is no longer possible.

Huh? If you are not in communion with him - then he does NOT represent the Church of Christ, does he?

One does not have to be in communion with an Orthodox Church to recognize it apart of the Church of Christ.
