Beslan, August 31, Interfax - The number of Muslims in Northern Ossetia has dropped following the Beslan tragedy. Many of them get baptized.
‘Islamic positions in Ossetia have weakened considerably. How could it be otherwise, if many children who survived the terrorist act and the parents of the victims were baptized though earlier had considered themselves Muslims’, Versiya weekly wrote this week.
It notes that the Beslan victims, including Muslims, were buried according to the Orthodox rite, and none of their relatives objected.
After the terrorist act in Beslan independent religious leaders elected by people lost their official positions, which fact affected the situation with Islam in the republic not in the best possible way, - continues the newspaper. There are rumours that the Ossetian central mosque in Vladikavkaz might be closed soon.
