Ladies at the left and men at the right

Post by Jean-Serge »

Hello,

I am searching ALL THE REASONS that justify that ladies should stand at the left of the church and men at the right. Theological reasons are welcome... And historical and canonical elements too...

Seperation is especially important for prostrations, it also helps keep one from looking at a member of the opposite sex when one should be concentrating on the service one is at. The north side corresponding with the side of the icon of the Theotokos on the Iconostasis being where the women stand and likewise the south side having the icon of our Lord being the side the men stand on is rather fitting as well.

Yes but...

Yes but does anyone have anything else like a Patristic quotation, a canon etc...

Furthermore, it is easier to look at all the girls (or men) when they are located in the same side than when they are mixed with the other gender...

Apart from this I support this segregation.

I have been told that the women traditionally stand in the north side because the icon of the Mother of God is to the left of the Royal Doors, and men in the south side because the icon of the Lord is to right. But I've never come across a Patristic or canonical explanation of this practice, as far as I can recall.

My wife complains that she has an easier time singing when in the company of other women. She says men's singing tends to throw her off key. Maybe that's a unique reason and not common, but I thought I'd mention it as one more possible reason to add to the others.
