Thanks for clearing that up. The Bp. John of San Francisco that H.E. Bensusan was referring to was the Metropolia's Bp. John Shahovskoy. Now what he said makes more sense.

St. Herman of Alaska is a saint of our Church. He was canonized as a saint. I don't know who or when anybody called him a "hippy" or a "forerunner of the civil rights movement"; Orthodox history is full of clergy and laity saying all kinds of stupid (and incorrect) things: better not to condemn those things while at the same time conflating them with the sacred and true acts of the Church.
