When a Metropolitan Retires,is he still Metropolitan

Post by spyridon »

Im just curious because on the OCA website a retired Metropolitan is shown being vested in a Church service and the Photos are labeled Metropolitan....if that is so,then Vladyka Metropolitan Vitaly has every right to still be Metropolitan,Right?.......any clarifications would be greatly accepted and kept for the years to come..
anyway youll have to visit the Oca website and see the new pictures for june 2005,I was unable to attach photos...anyway the Metropolitan is Theodosius, and Bishop Benjamin

Spyridon,

I could be wrong, but AFAIK this whole "retirement" thing is something new. But either way, a priest or a bishop have the Charismas bestowed on them when they were ordained and are therefore priests and bishops. If a doctor retires, he still posses the ability to save lives and treat people even though he has decided not to do it regularly anymore. I don't see how when a member of the clergy "retires", he loses anything. Therefore, it does not seem unusual at all that a "retired" bishop would serve a liturgy.
