Background info request - Rev Scofield & Fr Boris Motcha

Post by Myrrh »

Hello all.
I bought a UNESCO book on icons from ebay and found that it had been given to Rev Scofield; there's a letter inside from Fr Boris Moltchanoff thanking Rev Scofield for his hospitality, and the book has been signed by many others of the Russian EO Church of St Alexander Nevsky. I tried searching for information about this church and these priests, but without success. The album came from an estate sale, could mean that Rev Scofield is of blessed memory.

Thanks

:(

No one knows anything about them or the churches or where I can find info?

The letter is undated, the book is copyright 1958. Fr Moltchanoff explains the history of Soviet use of icons and churches and concludes:

"But as it is impossible to transfer one's negative attitude towards the Soviet government on the enslaved Russian people, in the same measure it is impossible to transfer one's aversion to Soviet propaganda on icons by which means the Soviets are trying to deceive foreigners, so as to appear before them in the character of "the angel of light" (2nd Cor. XI ch. 14th v.).

We are convinced that no profane outward advertising frame of these icons can do any harm to the sublime artistic spirit that had produced them, and so we beg leave to present you this treasure of Christian Russia awaiting the day of its liberation."

It's a magnificent book, high quality artwork which I think does do justice to the spirit of those who produced them.

... Can anyone tell me anything about Fr Moltchanoff? Is the Alexander Nevsky a ROCOR church?

Well, anyway, thanks for reading.
