WS and RBY:

If it is meant for you to be Orthodox then God will provide, but in the mean time there are things you can try..... Fr Nick is right to suggest calling the parish priest. He should be able to connect you with people living in your direction. Maybe just requiring a short trip to their homes.

I have a friend in Florida who lives about three hours from her church. To attend she has to stay over night somewhere. She has developed good friendships over the years and now spends the night at their homes.

Good luck, don't give up.....with God anything is possible.

How do you post a quote from another cafe member without retyping it?

WretchedSinner--It is most definately meant for you to be Orthodox! With respect and love to my sister, Ekaterina, the idea that God would lead you to be anything but Orthodox is not consistent with Orthodox thinking. If the Orthodox Church is indeed the true, authentic church (which it is!), then why would it be meant for you to be anything but?

I have only been orthodox for one year, now, so I still have much to learn. However, I don't know why you would have to have a spiritual advisor (other than your priest) before you could become Orthodox. It seems to me that it would be much better to enter into the church than indefinately delay that extremely important step.

Humbly,

Gregory

When you are reading another member's post, at the upper-right hand corner of the post will be a button called "quote". Press this button to quote their message.

The problem is this. To enter the church you must become a catechumen.
I wish to be a member of ROCOR, but they won't give me
catechesis, as I don't speak Russian.
Catechesis is, I believe, the beginning of Christian life.
Without some spiritual advisor to offer me catechesis,
I can't move forward.

Reading books like St.Theophan the Recluse, The Path to Salvation
only point this out more clearly.
Baptismal regeneration, and the real presence of Christ in communion
are medicines for the soul. I stand in need of these medicines,
but I can't get to them. This is why I am thinking about joining the OCA. For
all their faults, at least they will receive me as a catechumen.

Gregory, how did you enter the church? How long were you a catechumen?

I hardly knew what an Orthodox church looked like inside until last September.
I haven't any Christian background at all,
so I've been reading books, but they can only take you so far.
What I need is now is some praxis, and some guidance.
This is where I need God's intervention ,to help me find which path to take.
Do I stick with ROCOR or join OCA?

Please pray for me.

"If a pagan wished to become a Christian he was given some elementary instruction in the fundamental doctrines and practices of the Church . He had to show by his conduct that he was in earnest about the step he was about to take. So far, he was only in the stage of inquiry, and was not counted as a Christian at all..."

St. Cyril of Jerusalem - Catechetical Lectures

Post by Chrysostomos »

wretched sinner,

Read these lectures of St. Cyril of Jerusalem. They are the Catechetical Lectures. They are worth their weight in gold and are for those who are wanting to become catechumens - that's you.

Regardless of that, they would be worthwhile to anyone. I am reading them now, and there is alot in there that I wish I would have know about before coming into the faith.

Bottom Line - I wish someone would have directed me to them! :)

Here is the link: http://www.ccel.org/ccel/schaff/npnf207.htm

Pray, read them all (lectures), then start thinking about your direction. I can't think of recommending anything better than that.

Your fellow struggler in Christ,

Rd. Chrysostomos
