Athens - Authorities have charged the head of the Orthodox Church of the southern Greek city of Korinthos with swindling more than euro;290 000 of funds from local churches and foundations over the past decade, the daily newspaper Apogevmatini reported on Sunday.
Prosecutors at the appeals court in the town of Navplion accused Metropolitan Panteleimon Karanikolas of ordering the money, said to have been filched from funds provided by ecclesiastical foundations, to be deposited in accounts under his name and of trying to hide the transfers, including by destroying the financial records of his church in 1997.
Five other clerics were also charged in the case, the newspaper reported, adding that hearings were expected to start soon.
The powerful Greek Orthodox Church has been shaken by a series of corruption scandals that have seen its popularity dwindle.
In his sermon on Sunday, the embattled leader of the Greek Orthodox Church, Archbishop Christodoulos, appealed for self-criticism and urged the faithful to take part in vigils on Tuesday night in churches throughout the country.
Pressure for Christodoulos to resign has mounted with news of the scandals involving corruption of judges by priests. Christodoulos himself has come under fire for writing a letter in 1996 appealing to a judge to support a request for a convicted drug trafficker to be released from custody.
