I really don't think it's possible to count--they claim 500,000, but maybe 200,000 is a more accurate number? Who knows.

It is interesting how Nektarios worded his question, as it made me think about somthing that never really occured to me before....

Generally speaking, our churches don't belong to the synod or bishop like those of the new-calendar. It would be much more acurate to say Esphigmenou is with us, but not belonging to us like a possesion. They could leave tomorrow and are free to do so. I don't think this can be said so much among the ecumenists; their properties, which are worth much more money, seem to be more subject to the decisions and demands of their bishops - which is not bad on paper I guess.

Good Point OOD. Am I correct in saying that the Monastery is with the
Synod headed by Archbishop Chrysostom II?

I didn't mean your question was wrongly asked... ;)

To answer your question, yes it is. This is therefore where they receive all of their ordinations. Of course this is not something that is advertised for reasons of the Athonite charter and potential court cases.

Can people visit the Esphigmenou Monastery? Or would I have to bust out my Zodiac and my marine corps ninja stealth to visit? :P
