Some of the posts express view which may be regarded as either subjective or speculative. If.............. then.......... may ...... or may not.............. etc., etc.

May I therefore add another subjective view, and a speculative one too? Familiarity with the Greek koine and/or Slavonic is an asset, indeed as was familiarity with the Latin too in past times, and maybe even up to the present day. The venecular too has the benefit of presenting a teaching function, more readily accessible, along with the icons and symbolism of the layout of the church, etc. Each brings its own gift for those who are attentive, but what may touch a closed heart?

The 'filioque' was an addition, not an error in translation.

In the GOA website translation of the Nativity Kontakion,the entire phrase:
"Dance for joy, O earth, on hearing the gladsome tidings;"
is also an addition which does not appear in the original.

Call me over-cautious if you will, but wasn't the most tragic split between the Eastern and Western Church due in part to one eensy-weensy latin word- 'filioque'.

Their additions/alterations are much more. Here's a list:

1)The Filioque (the first one chronologically)
2)Papal Infallibility
3)Papal Supremacy
4)The denial of Communion to little children
5)Communion only with bread
6)The use of host instead of regular bread
7)The erroneous and twisted doctrine about Christ's sacrifice
8)The twisted teaching about Original Sin
9)The opinion that God is a sadist and totrures people in Hell with physical tortures
10)Limbus
11)The use of musical instruments in Church
12)The Immaculate Conception
13)The canonization or beatification of unrepenting serial killers, like Alojizije Stepinac
14)The Inquisition
15)Baptism without immersion
16)Confession, where the sinner hides and avoids humility

This isn't about the RC's additions, it is about the Orthodox additions in the various english translations. Listing the RC innovations does not give us the right to make our own additions to the Church's Hymns when translating them into english.
