High Tech Passports

The resting place of threads that were very valid in 2004, but not so much in 2024. Basically this is a giant historical archive.

Sorry, George Australia, it may be many things but crackpot? In Britain the Labour government is pushing for biometric national identity cards. Some have questioned this, of course, but two objections come up. The relatively high failure of the machinery to correctly recognise a card holder, and more worryingly, a suggestion that subcutaneous implants would be much more effective! (Sorry, I recycled the newspaper with that reference in - unintentionally).

George Orwell's 1984 is coming, and one's of its architects is good ol' Tony Blair.

I was honestly and presently suprised to see that Baroness Thatcher, the Iron Lady of old, was against ID cards as well.

And neither could the same accusation be made of iron-hewn Margaret Thatcher, who calls ID cards a "Germanic concept completely alien to this county" - much like the Windsors, Christmas trees and Protestantism.

I kind of like the last half of that sentence, as well! :)

Yes, Lady Thatcher has expressed herself unequivocally. Sadly good ol' Tony cannot hold a candle to her. And I write as one who has or had serious differences of view with both.

Not too sure I want particularly to climb on any anti-German sentiment, although any thought of Herr Rumsfeld might shake that resolve. (Donald, I just like to let you know I sign all my correspondence myself and do that despite altered 'neurological' sensation in my hands...).

I'm of German descent myself and found it quite amusing, particularly that authors dig at other "Germanic" things that are quite English nowadays.

"Papers, please..."

As for Herr Rumsfeld, Dave Letterman made a rather funny joke last night on his show.

"It seems that Secretary Rumsfeld has had some problems with his autopen. Yeah...it started signing all his letters Lemony Snickett".

Schulz, thank you for making me smile. I was feeling a little melancholy. /\

I agree with much of what has been said here. It certainly does seem that the implantable chips will be introduced incrementally.
In my own case here in NC, USA I recently went to get a passport and was told I could NOT smile for the picture as it would interfere with facial recognition software that was now in use in the "war against terrorism."
May we be wise enough to stand with those Martyrs who have gone before us when our time of trial comes.
In Him,
