I agree with Met. Philaret, which was graciously posted by Fr. James Thornton.

However, almost every war now is fought in the name of God and Country, and we even see that every German soldier in World War II had a belt buckle emblazoned with the words: "Gott mit uns" (God with us).

Therefore, I believe an Orthodox Christian must be very careful who he thinks is "righteous", and he should be very careful not to deceive himself.

More specifically, I do not believe the situation in Iraq has anything to do with God or defending an Orthodox land.

Coming from the wife of a woman whose husband has been in a REAL war this posting makes me want to vomit.

Not a REAL war? Any time Service members get killed in a foreign country its a REAL War. Go tell a Marine or an Army Solider who has been to Iraq or Afganistan they are not in a real war. See what they say to you.

Nektarios,

You are right that it would be insensitive to say such a thing to a veteran. But Tess's point is that her husband lived through a war on his own territory. The US has not be invaded I believe since 1812. Can you imagine how different it must be to have troops actually invading YOUR homeland and raping your family members, burning your house down, killing your father/uncle/grandfather/etc.?? It's very different then fighting abroad in a limited-engagement against far more untrained opponents.
