D****it, that's not a Jesuit maxim. Sorry for jumping on you, gphadraig, but you won't find it taught in any Jesuit source. Early in the 20th century, the Jesuits offered a big cash prize to anyone who could show that they had ever taught such a maxim. Of course no one came close to succeeding. If you follow the paper trail, the source of the slander is Protestant.

BTW, you will find an eloquent refutation of "the end justifies the means" in Pope John Paul II's encyclical Veritatis Splendor (yeah, yeah, I know, I know).

LatinTrad, sorry, I was taught by them and know that in various guises this is just what they believe and practise. Nor am I alone in believing this to be the case. My references are not to hand but no doubt I can rummage around in the next few days and grab a couple. This 'philosophy' has been a Vatican practice of long standing as well.

Being both exceedingly clever and bookish they are apt to deny it, of course, or is it they are 'in denial'?

My sources are not protestant by the way, anything but that.
