Traditional Orthodox Churches around Sacramento, CA?

Post by TomS »

I am going to be out in Sacramento, CA for business and will be staying over the weekend of July 17th.

Does anyone have recommendations on any Traditional Orthodox Churches around that area (i.e. around 1-2 hours in the vicinity of Sacramento) that I should visit?

Looking for one to attend Vespers on Saturday Night and Liturgy on Sunday

Thanks

If you are going to be that close, you really owe it to your self to go visit Saint John of Shanghai and San Francisco's tomb at the cathedral there.

If you consider ROCOR OK, we have a parish there. (See below.) Fr. Paul is very accessible.

I just returned today from San Francisco where I was privileged to be at the 10th anniversary celebrations of St. John's glorification. What a spiritually uplifting event! Many there, including me, felt that it was similar in spirit to the glorification itself.

Went to the Vigil last night from 6:00 to 8:30. It was supposed to take 1.5 hours to get there from Sacramento, but it took an hour longer because of the traffic. WHY they put a tolls on the ONLY bridge going into San Francisco from the East I will never know. Must have been a 5 mile backup to just get over the bridge.

Oh! Guess what? All the women did NOT have their heads covered!!

Yep. I was surprised because, since it was a ROCOR church, I had always been told that THAT IS WHAT WOMEN DID! Just goes to support my view that it's the people on the internet that are the "canon police" and FORTUNATELY NOT the Church!

I was taken aback when I went to the "tomb" of St. John because I expected just see closed casket, but he is in a casket with a glass top. His face is covered, but his mummified hands are visible and he is laid out in full vestements. It was quite striking.

I purchased a wall Cross and had it blessed and picked up some Holy Oil.
But of course, the WHOLE thing was in Slavonic! :x Heaven FORBID if a NATIVE of the country that this Church is IN would want to attend and UNDERSTAND what is going on! Stupid Ethnic Orthodox! Must not let THOSE people into our little ethic club!

And just so that you all don't think I am picking on the Russians - I attended Liturgy this morning at a GOA church in Sacramento and the priest was Asian American (look to be Japanese descent) -- but he did most of the Liturgy in GREEK! HOW STUPID IS THAT!!!!????

Music -wise -- I much prefer the Greek Byzantine chant over the Russian western style 4 part harmony.

On Saturday, I put together a list of the different Orthdox Churches to go see in the Sacramento area. I drove to each one and they WERE ALL CLOSED!

I think it's CRAZY that churches are closed on a Saturday. People work during the week.
