Intersting point you brought up Natasha. Cosmetic surgeons also get a bad name, but I have known people who were in horrible accidents they just destoyed thier faces but now it is impossible to tell because of surgeries to correct it. A good reminder ( to me at least) that things that you wouldn't think of or forget about can actually be very good - now to remember that rather than judging!

I think makeup is ok sometimes in moderation, but can also lead to sin-VANITY, i.e. women who can't go out of the house without makeup, etc. Working in a plastic surgery office, you have to somewhat fit in so I usually wear mascara and fill in my eyebrows so they look symmetrical.

A few months back I tried MaryKay as a means of extra income and became quickly disgusted by the people who REALLY get into selling it. As soon as I heard, "I never leave my house without putting on my face, my face is my advertisement to the world," I thought I was going to be sick.

Women who can't go out without makeup definitely have self esteem issues.

What's even worse, I am a surgical technician for my dad's hair transplant business, and in the last month TWO old Serbian Orthodox priests have contacted him to "have some work done". My dad is thrilled and says, "well they're people too," but I am mortified at the thought of planting grafts on their heads one day and seeing them another day serving the Liturgy. Am I being unfairly judgemental? Cosmetic sugery just seem very pious to me.

Tessa,

You are right, there are a lot of women with self-esteem issues...most women I know want some kind of plastic surgery for themselves, and they are amazed when I tell them that I am happy the way I am. One woman actually told me that she admired me because of it :ohvey: !
It is sad to see so many people hating themselves. A funny thing is, I think one of the reasons that I don't hate my features is because of going to church. I just look like the most of the other Russian women around me...short with a tendency to become curvy! :D

I once had a priest tell ask what we would think if there was a beautiful icon and someone who did not truly understand iconography decided it was flawed and painted over it. He would undoubtedly ruin it, although perhaps not in his mind.

Then he said this is what cosmetic (not corrective) surgeries, make-up, tattoos and piercings are to the greatest artist of them all, God, and His creations.

Hmmm, I have horrible dark circles. I cover them up. Somehow, I can't make myself believe that I am interfering with God's creation because I don't want to look like I haven't slept in days.
With all the terrible problems of the world, and all the opportunities for sin in our society, I can't believe that make-up causes you to go to hell!
