Reading the Old Testament

Post by Theodora Elizabeth »

How do you read the Old Testament as Orthodox? Especially since there are many days without any prescribed OT readings? Coming from an Episcopalian background, where there WERE OT readings for every day, this is just taking getting some used to.

I just received "The Bible and the Holy Fathers for Orthodox" by Johanna Manley late last week, and I really like having it all in one place, so I do now have the OT Feast day Vespers readings.

I read the daily Epistle and Gospel, but am wondering how I should do the OT. Yes, I have asked my priest about this, but I did want others' opinions.

Thanks,
Theodora Elizabeth

Glory to Jesus Christ!

Yes, I too would be most interested in a response to this, coming from a Roman Catholic background where it is post Vatican II practice to have readings from the old testament every day.

I personally find that reading writings from the church fathers is the best way, as they have all kinds of references and homilies on the old testament. Right now, for instance, I am reading through the homilies of Blessed Jerome on the psalms, and he expounds on many topics and parallels from throughout the scriptures.

In peace,

I pick it up and read it. Brenton's English translation of the Septuagint.
