This is an amazing book...if my memory serves me correctly, much of it is based on the account given by the Patriarch's own aid, and other unique sources.

History of the Council of Florence
Ivan Ostroumoff, trans. Basil Popoff
Sound dull? Some 600 years ago, an attempt was made to create a "false union" between the Orthodox Church and the papacy... a union based not on Truth but on political expediency, not upon freely chosen oneness in Faith, but upon political (and somewhat inhuman) pressure. Its result? The obvious sanctity of a few, the tragic human weakness of many displayed, the apostasy of too many -- and a demonstration of the people of God as the guardians of the Faith, even in spite of the unfortunate gullibility of some of their shepherds.

Thanks for that link, OOD.
I would definitely add to my reading list on this topic:

Byzantine East & Latin West: Two Worlds of Christiandom in Middle Ages and Renaissance by Deno John Geanakoplos, Harper & Row, 1966. Out of print but several dozen copies come up on an "Out of Print" search at Barnes and Noble's website.
