That is horriable. But no body is perfect.

All that I've heard is hearsay and rumor (when I was Antiochian and thinking about becoming a monastic I asked around some). FWIW, though, what I've heard match what others have said, that there's resistence to a monastic movement "high up" in the Antiochian Church in America.

Maybe there is wisdom for this that none of us understand . . . I would guess that monasticism is not very compatible with American culture. That's not to say we shouldn't establish monasteries, but I am sure there would be clashes, many misunderstadings, and distrust of monastics here, such as the incident with the Fr. at St. Anthony's monastery in AZ.

His parents, who are Orthodox themselves, accused the monastery of being a cult and brainwashing their child. It was a crazy controversy, which from what I have read was completely without merit. The parents could not accept his asceticism and submission he had made to his spiritual father.

I could see that someone might conclude monastic communities could actually hurt the Orthodox mission in America, but I don't think so. What do you think?

I think most of us misunderstand monasticism, Nektarios.

I dont think we misunderstand it to the point of thinking it to be a cult.

Personally, I do. Not that we think it to be a cult; but we misunderstand it in other ways, in ways that are just as aweful and disturbing. I'm sorry that I've led away from the subject of the thread, though, I apologize, and won't do it again.
