An 8th Ecumenical Council!

Post by Waldemar »

Not only does it seem possible, but it only seems meet and right that the True Church, those groups that have helpfully identifed themselves as:

FROC/ROAC/AROC: Free Russian Orthodox Autonomous Church, GOC/TOC: Genuine/True Orthodox Churches of Greece, Catacomb Tikhonite & Josephite Churches of Russia, et al.

should gather together in an 8th Ecumenical Council to formally issue canons for this modern age ( e.g.fully defining the borders of the Church, i.e. "Who's In and Who's Out") and to formally anathematize the heretics of World Orthodoxy joining them with the ranks of the Arians, Nestorians, et. al.

In this way they will demonstrate to the world that the Church is under the continued guidance of the Holy Spirit and that the Church indeed stands completely apart from the heretics of World Orthodoxy.

The Church of the Eight Ecumenical Councils can shine out like a New Jerusalem, a city on the hill that cannot be hid drawing all who are truly True to its bosom!

Can this 8th Council be called? Should it be called?

I know that I do not need to remind our moderators that the time of THE antichrist draws near.

A seemingly well-intentioned World Orthodox "priest" brought up the fact that many parishes that make up The Church (FROC/ROAC/AROC: Free Russian Orthodox Autonomous Church, GOC/TOC: Genuine/True Orthodox Churches of Greece, Catacomb Tikhonite & Josephite Churches of Russia, et al.) are not in communion with each other.

And to further wall themselves off from their Orthodox Brothers and Sisters.

There already was an 8th ecumenical council in 879 :)

Plus there was a 9th in 1341. :)

Please do not message me with questions about the forum or moderation requests. Jonathan Gress (jgress) will be able to assist you.
Please note that I do not subscribe to "Old Calendar Ecumenism" and believe that only the Synod of Archbishop Kallinikos is the canonical GOC of Greece. I do believe, however, that we can break down barriers and misunderstandings through prayer and discussion on forums such as this one.

I'm curious Anastaios, did you say what you said because you believe it whole-heartedly, or just to make a point? :)

Also, it might come as a suprise to some people, but the Ecumenical Patriarchate, the Moscow Patriarchate and other groups have been trying to organize another Ecumenical Council for decades now--thankfully with little success.

If the end does not come first, a council will be called when the time is right, Waldemar. Personally, I hope we Orthodox can unite soon--or at least start taking some steps to unite soon. If people are going to fall into error, I pray that it will not be because of us. In other words, if people remain in world Orthodoxy, I do not want it to be because of my own sins. Not that I think our own conflicts (ROAC, GOC, etc.) gives an excuse for a World Orthodox Christian making a wrong choice, but I fear finding myself on judgment day, with God saying to me "why did you give the devil a foothold? why did you give those in jurisdiction X an excuse (even if an unjustifiable one)? They should have changed, but you should have changed as well".

Btw, while providing us with all those quotes about non-judgement, did it perhaps occur to you that sarcasm can be a vehicle for articulating a very judgmental mindset? Sarcasm is sometimes a veil behind which harsh judgment hides. And now I've judged you! Oy!

An Ecumenical Council by "we Orthodox" will do much to disabuse the World Orthodox of the notion that they share a communion (whether visible or invisible) with the Church.

A clean break - so we all parties have a clear understanding about where they stand with each other.

" Little children, it is the last time: and as ye have heard that antichrist shall come, even now are there many antichrists; whereby we know that it is the last time. They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would no doubt have continued with us: but they went out, that they might be made manifest that they were not all of us." 1 John 2:18-19
