Hi OOD,

Yes, I see what you are saying. Sometimes it is hard to balance the fine line between good fun and hurting someone's feelings.

Something you might appreciate after the beard comment is that in our Religious Ed class we had a very nice priest come in who in the midst of a conversation said as an aside that he didn't think a beard made a priest (I have to agree with him that the two issues are not directly related but of course this doesn't mean I think that a priest should not have a beard).

So he hands out a book for eighth graders and get this--only one out of many priests had a beard in their explaining the sacraments issue. In fact, I should scan in the picture of the one priest--he even has on hair gel! he looks more like a fashion model than a priest!

For anyone who didn't quite get my disorganized statement above, the priest says beards don't make a priest. Then he hands out a book with almost no bearded priests. I wondered what the subtle message was! :ohvey:

This would be the best thing to do. In no way is that going to impact your faith. Knowing other traditions is important. And before anyone suggests that he would thus be "praying with heretics" no one said he had to pray when he is there.

OL,

Let's stop going around and around aruging over whether anyone answered you before. I think if you read the first few quotes in this thread Mor Ephrem said yes, they do use it in their liturgy. At any rate, to try and make up for teasing you yesterday I took the time to find a liturgy online:

http://pharos.bu.edu/cn/prayers/StBasilLiturgy.html

If you type CONTROL-F and type in Theotokos it will take you to where they call Mary Theotokos in their liturgy.

In all seriousness, I thought the funniest thing, and this is just personal, was "Met." Phil picture. I laugh when I see that picture because it reminds me when my son was looking through this new-calendarist childrens book which explains the Divine Liturgy (or for them, what's left of it). In one of the pictures, was this beardless priest with a Latin style haircut giving communion. I explained to my 2yr-old, this is a priest giving communion. He answers in his 2yr old vocabulary, "no, that's a altar boy". Out of the mouth of babes.

Dear OOD,

I've read the book in question ,the priest DOES look about five years old. It has pained me for years.

But, I must protest your total lack of sense and charity, here. Define for me, please, a "Latin haircut"?

And how necessary is it to add "Or for them, what's left of it?" Your point could have been made with much more humour had those two things not created a sensation of sorrow that you could disregard Christ's commandment to love.
