Syurgery Update #4

Post by Грешник »

The latest update is 1:30pm.

Vladyka is still sedated. The doctor has determined that there is sufficient
capabilities to make five bypasses. Four of them have already been sewn, and he is working on the fifth one now. Metropolitan's condition is stable. He is still on the heart bypass machine, which is pumping blood and oxygen into his heart. This is approaching the critical time when they warm up the body after the bypasses are in. His body temperature has been brought down to 26 degrees celcius. The nurses said they will be in there for about another 2 hours, since this is a very long procedure.

3:30 update

Vladyka Gregory has been told that there has been a little bit of a
reversal, in an almost completely smooth operation. It has taken longer than
usual because of the need to clear the scar tissue from the previous
operation. When they started to take Vladyka Metropolitan off the
bypass-pumps, which is the most critical time, the heart needed help to pump
the blood until it builds up strength. The doctors elected to put in a
balloon pump right underneath the heart. This boosts the pumping power of
the heart. He told us that every bypass surgery they make provision
beforehand for a balloon pump. The doctors of course would prefer not to put
in the balloon pump. This indicates only that the heart has been weakened,
which is expected in a second open-heart surgery operation. There was a lot
of scar tissue that had to be removed, and Vladyka Metropolitan was on the
bypass pump for a long time. This weakened the heart, and, therefore, they
needed this balloon pump to boost the power that the heart has. Dr. Barry
says that he is not overly-concerned, because this is sometimes expected in
operations such as this. Vladyka Metropolitan is still in the process of
getting off the bypass pump, and this is a critical time. They expect the
balloon to remain in him for about 24 hrs. and when the heart has built up
enough strength the balloon will be taken out immediately. Vladyka Gregory
and Fr. Andrei are staying at the hospital all the time. As in all
operations of this type, they say that he is in critical condition at this
point.

4:20pm Update

The nurse just came out and explained to Vladyka that things have gotten
better now. They are closing Vladyka up. The pace maker wires have been
removed and the heart is beating by itself with the help of the balloon
pump. He is being sewn up at this time. Still, they say with the balloon
pump in place, they consider this critical. He is completely off the bypass
pump. In one half hour the main surgeon, Dr. Anderson, will come out and
speak with Vladyka Gregory. Now that he is off the bypass pump, he is able
to go to an intensive care unit. There, Vladyka Gregory and Father Andrew
may visit him and they will anoint him with oil from St. John of Shanghai
whom Vladyka Valentine loves very much.

4:50

The operation is complete. They just took Vladika from the operating room
to intensive care. He is still sedated. Doctor Anderson came out and spoke
with Vladika Gregory, and said that he expected it to be a long surgery, but
not this long. However, he is pleased that everything turned out as well as
it did. He said that when the heart builds up strength, the balloon pump
will be taken out. He said that he put in five bypasses, and his condition
will be much better than after the three bypasses that he had in 1996. It's
been very stressfull for all of us, but thank God that everything turned out
well. Vladika Gregory is going to go in to see him in a half hour.

5:30pm

Dear Faithful,

Vladyka Metropolitan is now in the Intensive Care Unit of the hospital. His
eyes are opening, and he is conscious that Vladyka Gregory and Father Andrew
are with him. He still has a large breathing tube in his mouth, which
prevents him from talking, but this will be taken away soon. Also, the
balloon will be taken away as well. His strength is increasing
progressively.

Thank you for your prayers.

Vladyka Vlaentine back in Surgery! :-(

Post by 尼古拉前执事 »

9pm

Vladyka Metropitan went to the Intensive Care Unit around 6pm and started to
become conscious. Then he started resting comfortably. The amount of blood
he used during the operation was 1 litre, two units. This is a relatively
small amount. He received one more unit in the Intensive Care Unit. They put
a tube in him to drain off any bleeding, which at that time was minimal.
Now, around 8:30pm, they noticed that there is bleeding, not a lot, but
enough that Dr. Anderson wanted to know where it was coming from. Therefore,
he decided to take Vladyka back to the operating room and open him up to
determine where the bleeding is coming from. We are told that this is not
that unusual. This part of the procedure is fairly quick, in that Vladyka is
already attached to the machines which normally take a long time to put in
place. So, they just break the stitches and staples, open him up, and see
where the bleeding is coming from and fix it. Then they close him up. This
is a small set back, which God grant, will be rectified quickly.

Please continue to pray.

11:20 PM Update

Dear faithful;

Glory be to God!

Doctor Anderson just notified us that they found a number of small
points of bleeding which they fixed. Also, there was some blood clots
that they removed. They closed the Metropolitan up again and now he is
back in intensive care. Vladyka is resting now and we anticipate that
his heart will become stronger and stronger. Now, we are all going to
rest after a long day of mixed emotions of tears, anxiety, relief, and
joy.

May our merciful God grant Vladyka a speedy recovery. We will wait
until the morning to determine if all the brothers from the monastery
will come to visit him in the intensive care unit.

In our risen Lord and savior Jesus Christ

+Bishop Gregory

Russian church leader to have surgery here

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

BUENA VISTA - A leader in a branch of the Russian Orthodox Church faces heart surgery at a Colorado Springs hospital after experiencing chest pains after a service at a high-altitude monastery, his host said Tuesday.

Metropolitan Valentine of Suzdal, Russia, has had chest pain for more than a year but resisted treatment, said Bishop Gregory, head of the Colorado region of the Russian Orthodox Autonomous Church in America.

The heart condition, according to Gregory, was exacerbated by the altitude. Gregory said the 65-year-old Valentine will undergo a quintuple bypass operation today.

The Metropolitan underwent a similar procedure in 1996.

“He had no means to take care of it and the medical facilities in Russia are limited,” said the bishop, who like many other Orthodox leaders goes by his title and a single name. After a three-hour service Sunday at the Dormition Skete monastery, which sits at 9,000 feet in the central Rocky Mountains, a parishioner who is a doctor urged Valentine to have his condition checked.

The 1 million-member Russian Orthodox Autonomous Church operated underground in the former Soviet Union before it split from the Russian Orthodox Church.

It has 400 churches in Russia and six in the United States.
