Can anyone tell me what happened to the GOA's Archbishop Spyridon? Why was he deposed? They say Archbishop Iakovos is a holy man and right for the job, but what then of the former Archbishop?
(Just the facts please, no jurisdiction slamming. The Greek demos is more involved than the "jurisdiction" in this case anyway.)

Sorry, I am still a little confused. Was it that Hellenic-American laity and clergy did not approve of the monastic ministry of Archbiship Spyridon? To democratically remove a bishop seems like a pretty big deal. Is there some critical event in the history of Archbiship Spyridon's episcopacy that turned the tide against him perhaps? Am I correctly led to believe it was the Ephraim scandal?
And Patriarch Bartholomew "deposed" Archbishop Iakovos for being chairman of SCOBA!? Please, Romiosini, elaborate on your statement if you can. I find it a little shocking, though I am not offended in any way.

Please, let's use the proper terms.
Arch. Iakovos was RETIRED for agreeing to Ligonier 94's statement of Orthodox jurisdictional unity.
Arch. Spyridon was RETIRED for some serious canonical infractions. It was very sad because he was a traditionalist bishop...however that is no excuse for what he did; those who knew what he did are surprised he was not deposed and that he now lives in Portugal earning a pension.
At any rate, Arch. Demetrios seems to be doing a good job.

Please note that I do not subscribe to "Old Calendar Ecumenism" and believe that only the Synod of Archbishop Kallinikos is the canonical GOC of Greece. I do believe, however, that we can break down barriers and misunderstandings through prayer and discussion on forums such as this one.
It's hard to understand how you can again say "deposed." Neither bishop was deposed, as they both are still able to serve as bishops of the Church (I know, I have seen Arch Iakovos serve several times). They were retired. Please use the proper terms. Deposed means, "no longer a cleric/reduced to lay status."
Spyridon had a lot more evil going on than misappopriation of funds. That's all I'm going to say.
I would agree with you, however, that oftentimes the wrong man becomes patriarch.
