In Kosovo, Albanians burning Serbian Orthodox Churches

See the story from b92. Read at least the first two pages of headlines.

For an interesting twist on the news read boston globe. I really find it odd that they don't mention the burning churches and the Serbian Orthodox Church's attempts to protect the Mosque in Belgrade.

I have heard that some of the monasteries were shelled by mortar, although I haven't seen that verified (like anyone cares enough to look).

From B92, an eerie report.

UN administrators flee “Kristallnacht” | 23:46 | B92
PRISTINA -- Wednesday – UN administrators have abandoned offices in the Kosovo towns of Gnjilane, Prizren and Pec, fleeing what one UNMIK official described to B92 as “Kristallnacht”.

“Kristallnacht is under way in Kosovo,” the official told B92 on condition of anonymity.

“What is happening in Kosovo must unfortunately be described as a pogrom against Serbs: churches are on fire and people are being attacked for no other reason than their ethnic background,” he added.

Serbs and UN officers have been the target of attacks by Kosovo Albanians during most of the day and night. The most dramatic withdrawal was from Belo Polje on the outskirts of Pec, where UNMIK officials, retreating with Serb residents, where forced to shoot Albanian assailants in self-defence.

The Serbian Orthodox seminary in Pec has been razed, and Albanians celebrated its destruction by setting fire to the local church., said the UN official.

From Patriarch Pavle

[quote] "We offered our prayers to God for our suffering people in Kosovo and Metohija, for the descendants of those of our holy ancestors who knew to breathe their last be it on the stake or by the noose, but never to renounce their faith for any worldly interest whatsoever, nor to commit that which is unworthy and inhuman. We must preserve ourselves at this time from any unthinkable revenge, such as thoughtless individuals began committing in Nish and in Belgrade. We must have in mind that we are defending ourselves from evil and from evil-doers, but not in an inhuman manner, not in the manner of evil-doers. O Lord, help all, and even us and our enemies. They are in need of peace, freedom, justice as are we. O Lord, glory and thanks to You."

BBC world news had a lot of coverage on it this morning...so very sad. Pray for our Orthodox brothers and sisters.

I heard that the BBC was showing burning mosques in Belgrades with crazed, dancing Serbs with nary a mention of the Christian churches and monasteries. I don't have access to BBC. Is this the nature of the coverage?

I didn't see that in the BBC coverage...possibly I missed it...what I saw what a mosque's minaret burning and the look of a general riot in the streets...
