The resting place of threads that were very valid in 2004, but not so much in 2024. Basically this is a giant historical archive.

Funny thing is, I am not Russian, I am Greek. I feel more at home with the Russians that I do with Greeks. It is all about perception and comfort for me at least.

My 2 cents...

I thought Martinka was a Czech name for some reason...hmmm.

Peter,

You are corect! However, Martinka is my adoptive name. You are also correct in stating that it is of Czech origin. I was adopted at the age of 2. However, my biological mother was Italian and my father was Greek. I do not have any information on them other than that as my records are sealed in New Jersey, where I was born and I do not have legal access to unseal them as the requirements of unsealing records are very stringent.

I applaud your skill in the anatomy of a name. Good call.

Exactly Juvenaly, you can say those things of either group, it just depends on what you have been exposed to in your time. I don't think it is fair to stereotype any ethnic group (ahem-Aaron).

Tessa, you make me LAUGH! Your message reminds me of the stories my mother tells me about the old Russian club they had next door to the church when she was little (yeah thats right, a bar next door to church). Gotta love us Slavs  .

Oh, and don't get me wrong, I love the Greeks. I want to move to Greece someday, I just hope they will be more accepting there than they have been to me here!

Perhaps I should clarify. The Russians that I have met and have had detailed discussions with gave me a version of Orthodoxy similar to that of a cup of Turkish coffee with five lumps of sugar in it.

I'm evil. I know. It pains me to think that I was buried by jewish bankers not that long ago. sigh Well, at least I was buried by someone that wasn't a Turk!
